Lawn edge - how to make it neat?

We've inherited a beautiful garden with some irregular shaped flower beds around a central lawn. Some of them have sort of small wooden slats separating the beds from the lawn. Some have nothing.

I'd love to have a clearer separation between the beds and the lawn. Not least because masses of bark chips keep escaping into the lawn, especially if an animal has been playing around the edge of the lawn.

Is the attached edging solution a good one? What would you use?

Also, can anyone recommend a good edge trimmer that would work with the edging solution I go with? At the moment I'm shearing the edges by hand and it's exhausting and messy!

Thank you 🌾🌾🌾

We use everedge which was recommended by our garden designer. You can bend/shape it to your needs, and it is really easy but also really robust.

Another vote for everedge. It's not cheap but it's fantastic- really pleased with ours. Was easy to install and still looks great 7 years later.

What they said! 🤣

Everedge will be our next garden purchase.

Thank you. But oh wow, expensive. What height is typical, and what material have you gone for? I don't think I'd like the rusty look...

Also, can you use an electric lawn edger with it?

I balked at the cost of Everedge and used Smartedge instead.

Have never regretted it. I left a small trench just behind it (border side) that I do refresh once or twice a year with a trowel.

Other than that, I just use a normal B&D strimmer to cut the lawn edges to make them neat.

everedge you sink into the ground, it is flush with the lawn so you cannot see it, can mow and strim to your heats content. No fussy upkeep. It is great!

Bunce1 · 13/07/2022 14:31

we used the everedge classic

kumquattish · 13/07/2022 17:26

what's the difference between everedge and smartedge? The former seems to be double the latter. We have about 20-25m of edging to do, so the difference between the two is about £100-£150.

I don’t know of smart edge. Ever edge is steel and really strong.

Sprig1 · 13/07/2022 17:40

Everedge, definitely.

Bluebellbike · 13/07/2022 18:05

I have the same problem and am looking at Smartedge as it is so much cheaper. It is 14cm tall though, compared to Everedge being 7cm tall. I just need to measure round my lawn to see how much I need.

Does it rust though?

kumquattish · 13/07/2022 18:08

Ok everedge it is. Is 7mm tall sufficient for a 'normal' lawn? And I'm guessing brown is most natural?

OP posts:

We used brown. It’s great.

Furries · 14/07/2022 01:20

Everedge here too. I did black out the back and brown at the front (to match with some raised beds I did). If I had to choose, I prefer the black - it somehow makes it look crisper.

It can be a bit of a faff to install, but it’s worth it. Take your time, be methodical and don’t whack a finger with your rubber mallet!

Furries · 14/07/2022 01:23

As to height, it depends what your lawn/soil etc is like. I think I went for more than 7mm as my lawn is uneven - wanted to ensure I had a good barrier to stop grass growing through.
