It's seeded itself by accident or came in a pot with something else and I rather like it. Any ideas what it is?

Looks like an Agrostemma, also known as corncockle. Generally thought of as a weed but I keep them in my garden!

It could be a weed. It's very showy though. Lots of flowers that sort of twist open quite dramatically. It's also very tall- maybe 80cm. Sound likely. This is it after having been uprooted by some animal and left in the sun. It's not very happy!

I've grown corncockle this year, it's rather lovely.

I think it used to be a common weed in cornfields but was so successfully controlled with seed cleaning and herbicide it became extinct. I've only seen it grown from wildflower seed mixes, it is very beautiful.

Thank you all. It certainly is dramatic enough to be a garden flower!

Very easy to grow from seed, btw. I sowed them in pots, outdoors, and then planted out as seedlings. That may mean they will self seed like mad, but that's a good thing!

There is absolutely no reason for them to be thought of as a weed! They are a UK wildflower, and 100 years ago may have been a cornfield weed, but changing agricultural practices have brought them to the brink of extinction as a wild plant. They require clear soil to germinate x there is zero chance that they will be a “weed” in the sense of ground elder, bindweed, creeping buttercup and the rest.

replant it, give it a good watering. Then you can keep the seeds for next year. It’s an annual so will need reseeding every year, although if it likes you it will reseed by itself

You’re so lucky! I have tried to grow corncockle from seed and failed. They are so lovely.

NoSquirrels · 09/07/2022 10:51

Corncockle - I’ve got some this year that either self-seeded or I sowed late last year and forgot about! They’re lovely.

AlisonDonut · 09/07/2022 10:56

Yes corncockle. Lovely flower.

MerylSqueak · 09/07/2022 10:56

Yes. It's definitely corncockle. It's interesting because I did see some 'wildflower' mix nearby that DH gave me. None came up there where there was competition but this came up in a newly dug flowebed nearby. Something to consider @FictionalCharacter ?

Here are mine, I sowed them in big cells in spring, left them outside on a shelf, I think I potted them up, and then planted then out in my new front garden bed.
