Why is fox so interested in this plant??

Hello, I recently bought 3 identical plants from a nursery and put them in my garden. The resident fox quickly digged up one of them (called "resident" because it often snoozes there but it never poos nor pees here - or not that I can smell). I bought some plastic spikes to do a "fence" around that plant. The fox now tries to dig a hole around that fence in order to get in, so everyday I have to redo the soil.

Why on earth is it so interested in that plant? There are 2 identical plants right next to it and the fox never bothered🤔There is nothing hidden underneath the soil (I checked).

Is it possible that the compost that the plant came in us different from the other two you might not be able to see/ smell the difference but foxy may be able to smell it

might be the compost. especoally if the growers used bone meal.

Could a fox/dog/cat have marked the plant by peeing on it at the garden centre.

MereDintofPandiculation · 09/07/2022 10:33

Bone meal in the fertiliser convinces the fox that there is a buried carcass.

Hello, just to update, my question is now invalid. The fox has switched the target to the plant next to the fenced one. So I guess it is just going to dig the plants one by one.

Have now ordered two extra bag of spikes so I can fence all of them.

Many thanks for your replies ladies!

I found a random cat curled up in the sun around my choisya yesterday. They never come into our garden as we have dogs so maybe something about this plant attracts them? It does smell lovely!

Yes, I cannot really smell my Jasmine or Roses (must have weak sense of smell) but chosiya is the one that I really can smell and it is wonderful.
