SHORT VERSION : will autumn bliss give me a decent crop in shade (eg 2 hours sun a day) or does it need more than that? Where should I site this for the best results?

Hi All, I have a few v young berry plants which I’m growing in containers for the first year and plan to prepare a spot for them in the soil

i have a few options of what can go where:

1/prime position: full sun, a wall at front of house, gets about 6-8 hours sun , space for 1 plant (next to roses)
2/a sun trap in bank garden,

  • space for a 1m x 40 cm planter against a wall (on patio) gets a good 6 hours sun
3/ along back fence - 1 have about a 2m run which is 50cm wide, gets 4-6 hours sun (depending on which side)
4/ shady side of house - longest run of 3m, it’s about 30cm wide and right against my house wall (do berry plants cause any issues?) - also only about 30-40cm wude

i can also put some plants in containers if that would be better

the plants I have are (and roughly in order if interest to me!):

  • autumn bliss raspberry- a potted plant which looks a year old with 2 canes, plus a younger 1 cane

  • glen ample summer raspberry

  • Malling promise early summer raspberry

  • cascade summer raspberry

  • a Tayberry (thornless sugar Buckingham I think)

  • a loganberry (thornless)

  • a tulameen raspberry (fruits ar same time as cascade but apparently gives less fruit)

  • waldo, planning to keep that in a pot

  • 2 x lochness

  • 1 x thornless evergreen

I’m less concerned about the blackberries as I live in an area where I can go blackberry picking in nearby woods, but thought they might fruit in the very shady area at the side of the house

Based on what I’ve read I was planning to put: Tayberry/loganberry/summer raspberries where I get more sun, the autumn raspberries & blackberries in the shade (as per DIAGRAM). I’ve also posted a pic of the shady bit - it gets a couple of hours of sun in late afternoon/evening but it’s v shady (previous owners planted ferns etc). Is my plan sensible or where should o move them to get best results?

Last question: I was thinking of putting them all in the ground later on eg November. Would I get a better result next year if I move them in the next couple of weeks instead? (No sign at all of a crop this year so not worried about that)

Many thanks for any suggestions

My experience is that tayberry and loganberry crop well in shade, raspberry reasonably well, but blackberry is very iffy.

This is v helpful, thanks; in which case I’ll move the Tayberry & Loganberry to less ‘prime’ positions…

Realised after posting that my best spot (along back fence) is next to 2 sheds so if I plant there I’m likely to have canes pop up where I can’t reach them to hack back 😭😭😭 so thinking about what to do …

You can put raspberries anywhere you like. But next year, they will be where they like - including in your neighbour’s garden, the cracks of your patio, your lawn, your flower beds…! They are prolific spreaders. But yummy, so I tend to forgive them.

And rasps move to the sun... but I have success with Tay and Logan in shade. Also though you don't mention, morello cherry trees are happy to fruit in shade.

@Babdoc : the cracks in the patio ? 😬 Do you think it’s unwise to run them along side of house, do you think the roots would cause problems?

@SeaRabbit : thank you, the raspberries are much more my priority so am going to move them to the sunnier spot. It’s so useful to hear individuals’ experience vs the sales pitch!

Don’t panic, OP!They don’t root deeply very quickly, so you can easily pull the little horrors out while they’re still small, when they turn up in unwanted spots. My DD and her partner started with one raspberry which seems to have plans to conquer Edinburgh a garden at a time - their poor neighbours are being colonised by it, as is DD. They go round ripping them out each spring….
