Winter hanging baskets. Do I need to be preparing.

I moved into this bungalow in October last year. The people before me stripped the house of any design and paved blocked the entire driveway.

I cannot afford to re do it for a few years. So wanted some help in designing the front for the autumn and winter months. Any to make it look better.

is there such a thing as a winter hanging basket? Can anyone give me a list of what would work. The sun shines on the front of the house until about 1-2 pm is east facing.

Anything that I can put in pots etc. thanks.

I do ivy, cyclamen, wallflowers, bellis, miniature daffodils and iris, and a very small shrub (B&Q usually do a tray of six assorted ones in 9cm pots for about £7). Look in the garden centres/supermarkets/B&M in the autumn, you'll find every thing you need. They're all good plants for window boxes too if you've got space for them.

You can do winter hanging baskets and pots.
My area is quite windy, so I mainly do pots but you could put violas or pansies, varigated ivy , heuchera, primroses and possibly heathers in hanging baskets.
In my pots I put pansies, spring bulbs, especially crocus, the miniature daffodils and tulips, and grape hyacinths. I have Lenten Roses ( Hellibores) and cyclamen as well. I find Hellibores need to be put into the garden after about 3 years as they grow too big. I also had a lovely blue grass, which I transferred to the border after about 2 or 3 winters. I bought packs of patio bulbs from Lidl a couple of years ago, which have bloomed well for 2 winters. I leave them to die down and then fork in some blood, fish and bone in the autumn and topup the compost.
I have pots either side of the front door, and have a couple of sets which I swap over- so a winter set and a summer set.
The Gardeners World website and the RHS have information on winter pots etc. I am sure Monty Don will be looking at them soon.
