Large fast-growing flowering shrub

Yamadori · 27/06/2022 18:08

Hi, can you help please? I need some ideas for a large, vigorous, fast-growing shrub with spectacular long-lasting flowers, and preferably deciduous. Location is south-facing with free-draining sandy soil. Ultimate height about 8 feet although happy to prune to keep in bounds. Non-invasive root system. Oh yes, and attractive to bees etc.

Does such a thing exist?

Buddleia

APurpleSquirrel · 27/06/2022 18:16

Buddleia! But if you don't want it to spread, remove the seed heads as they're wind spread.

ChiefPearlClutcher · 27/06/2022 18:18

Buddleia, the one with variegated leaves is lovely. Grow a pink rose through it.

I have a tree mallow / lavatera which is currently looking stunning! Super easy to grow, I cut it practically to ggets to around 2 metres each su

Gahh - toddler attack and I hit send by accident. I cut it back to near ground level every March and it reaches nearly 2 metres again by midsummer. Drought tolerant, loads and loads of flowers, I love it.

Dilbertian · 27/06/2022 18:23

Definitely Lavatera. Absolutely gorgeous and absolutely bomb-proof. Needs no special care. Comes back year after year and is non-invasive. If it does seed itself, the seedlings are easy to pull up. Only thing to remember is to prune it before the flower buds form. If you want to prune it at all!

userxx · 27/06/2022 20:41

Yup, I bought a very small lavetera from Aldi about 3 months ago, it's shot up and is covered in flowers.

Stickytreacle · 27/06/2022 21:15

A domain crispum fits the bill, although it is semi evergreen, will get to 8 feet easily.

Stickytreacle · 27/06/2022 21:15

Sorry, autocorrect, it should be solanum crispum.

MeMe3Spoons · 27/06/2022 21:19

Hypericum, St John's Wort. Next door have two, they are absolutely glorious and around 6 feet at the moment. The flowers are abundant and last well into autumn.

Yamadori · 27/06/2022 22:04

Thank you, we already have a massive buddleia, and I've tried lavatera in the garden several times before, but it is strangely short-lived here for some reason. I would like solanum, but it looks like it is a scrambler and our neighbour is a pain in the neck if anything grows up the fence.

Hypericum could be just the thing.

California lilac tree / Bush- mine grow a out 1etre per year

Hydrangea

Both are super easy to grow and don't care if they are neglected.

Yamadori · 27/06/2022 22:42

Hydrangea won't be tall enough, it needs to reach at least the height of a 6ft fence asap but californian lilac is a great idea.

Weigelia is lovely and grows quite fast.

Lovely, some great ideas, thank you Smile
