Planted itself in a pot that was knocking around. Somebody gave me a pot plant that died and I dumped it outside intending to empty it, but never got around to it. This has been growing in the pot at least two years (yes I'm a gardening slattern) and is definitely not the original plant, which was something bushy and purple daisy-like. This is some sort of shrub, I think. Multiple stems, so not a tree. Any ideas?

The stems look a bit like my young dogwood, though the leaves look shinier so not sure about that.

Pittosporum?

Plant identifier app is suggesting glossy privet, for both photos.

Awwww, these apps spoil the challenge.

I could believe it is a ligustrum lucidum, except that most of the descriptions state that the leaves are much larger. I thought maybe this one has small leaves because it is young, but the picture implies not.

It looks a bit like a magnolia, never heard of them self seeding though!

Also, the untrimmed privet hedges round here all starting to flower, and this one has not even any buds. I don't recall it ever flowering. (But then I've never watered it, either.)

Leaf veins wrong. Dogwood has a characteristic vein pattern. The other interesting thing about dogwood veins is that if you gently pull a leaf in half but only a few millimetres, the stickiness of the veins is enough to hold the weight of the pulled-off part - see here

Could it be prunus Portuguese laurel
Looks a bit pale though - perhaps in need of feed
