Wisteria ideas

I have been given a young wisteria plant which I am delighted with. However I rent my home so I don’t want to grow it against a wall because (a) I would like to take it with me when I move and (b) that would lose me my deposit!

I also need it to grow in a large pot as I don’t have beds/grass in the garden (landlord has concreted front and back garden so I grow everything in pots or bags).

Does anyone have any ideas what support I could grow it up that could be portable?

I have one in a very large pot growing through a obelisk that I bought cheaply on line, from either Amazon or Wilco they sell the same product. They’re a put together yourself metal construction and we’re about £15.

Thanks Beebumble May I ask roughly how tall the obelisk is and what size pot you went for - I am totally clueless!!

I have one in a pot and am growing it as a standard plant so have just staked it.

The pot is not enormous and the wisteria seems happy though will need feeding and repotting at some point.

if you live in the kind of house that features in the opening credits of Bridgerton and you have a gardener, Wisteria is a great plant. But it will never be happy or grow well in a pot, or even up the side of a small house.

Get something more suitable like Hebe or Rosemary or a small patio Clematis.

Parietal I totally agree but as I have been given it as a gift I would like to try to get the best out of it despite my lack of a mansion and garden staff ! 😄

You can grow wisteria like a tree, with just a pot and a stake. Keep the main stem tendril free. You can Google how to do it, as it’s a little more complex than that, there is lots of videos and instructional sites, and they thrive quite happily.

Hi, the obelisk is about 1.6m and the pot 45 cms. I moved the Wisteria last Autumn from a different part of the garden and pruned it. It’s now taken off and is happily growing upwards.

My wisteria seems perfectly happy in a pot, had it about 6 years so far, produces lovely white flowers
