Potted rose not thriving

I’ve got a rose in a pot which I’m attached to as it’s a David Austin named after my daughter. I’ve had it 9-10 years. This year it is really weedy and producing no flower buds. I’m worried as it only seems to have one decent stem left. Any ideas what I can do to rejuvenate it? Not bothered about flowers this year but just don’t want it to die as they don’t sell it anymore 😭

I'd try a new bigger pot and feed it,

Thanks. Shall I do that soon? Or is there a ‘right’ time of year to re-pot?

Doing it now is fine. Use a feed for roses and feed every 2-3 weeks over the next few months. Prune it quite hard early next spring.

astersugar · 13/06/2022 19:32

How big is the pot? David Austin recommend using a pot with a minimum internal dimension of 45 x 45cm (roughly 60 litres).

Daisydoesnt · 13/06/2022 19:37

OP are you feeding it? Roses are greedy plants and need a lot of “food” and anything in a pot by definition won’t be getting much nutrition unless you are assiduous in your feeding. Are you feeding it? If it’s been in that pot / same compost for a year or two there won’t be any goodness left in it. There definitely won’t be if it’s been in it for nine years!

It’s fairly big, but will measure. Another pic:

I agree it needs a change of scenery! A bigger pot, some new compost and feed and in the spring I would cut it right back to the a shoot. Roses are fairly hardy , I think it just needs a freshen up.

Definitely bigger pot. You could repot it now - John Innes No.3. Roses are hungry and thirsty plants. www.amazon.co.uk/uncle-toms-UNCLE-TOMS-TONIC/dp/B00J1KMFE4/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?crid=3XUPJT3TSRVK&keywords=uncle+toms+rose+tonic&qid=1655145711&sprefix=uncles+tom%2Caps%2C80&sr=8-4 This rose feed is meant to be particularly good. Probably needs watering a lot too.
Every few years in the dormant season you need to dig the top section of the compost out and replace it. Are you pruning it around January? I would prune that quite hard this coming winter and see if it revives. Which David Austin is it? Some are hardier than others.

greenacrylicpaint · 13/06/2022 19:54

the pot is fine.

but I would re-pot into fresh rose compost. ideally you would do that in winter.

roses are hungry, they need a slow release fertiliser every couple of months from april-september if they are in a pot.

justabigdisco · 13/06/2022 19:56

Thanks all. Might it be better to put it in the ground? I have a nice sunny spot next to a wall. I only kept it in a pot as wanted to keep it with me when moving house but now in our (hopefully) last house - I’m not planning on moving again!!

Definitely plant it in that nice sunny spot. It will be much happier. And take a cutting to grow in a pot just in case you do ever move

BadAtMaths2 · 14/06/2022 09:03

currings are easy on roses. Put in ground, with some manure or home made compost if you’ve got some. Water in well and keep on eye on watering it in the first year while it establishes. Buy som rose food for it and follow the instructions.

toooldtocarewhoknows · 14/06/2022 14:24

I have many potted roses.

I put very well rotted horse manure around them regularly. They need a generous helping in the spring so they can grow new growth for summer, and again after first flowering so they can flower again late summer. They need a lot of nutrients and a lot of watering but need to be on blocks so they drain.
