It’s hard to tell but it might be a gooseberry bush?

EBearhug · 11/06/2022 16:01

Gooseberry

Lizziekisss · 11/06/2022 16:01

Gooseberries ?

Yewtown · 11/06/2022 16:01

Gooseberry

ttacticall · 11/06/2022 16:02

That's a gooseberry.

yikesanotherbooboo · 11/06/2022 16:03

Agreed; gooseberry

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 11/06/2022 16:05

Another vote for gooseberry!

SageRosemary · 11/06/2022 16:15

Yes, gooseberries, get topping and tailing and make yourself some jam!

ttacticall · 11/06/2022 16:18

Or buy some cream and whip up a fool.

Doodledoop · 11/06/2022 16:21

Goosegogs!

(gooseberries) Crumble or fool but with a shit-ton of sugar however you are having them.. good though similar acidic hit to rhubarb. Natures tangfastics!

Arglwydd · 11/06/2022 16:21

Gooseberries👍 Lucky you! You hardly see them nowadays.

Lilbunnyfufu · 11/06/2022 16:22

I think your all right I just googled gooseberry bushes and it looks just like the bushes growing on the plot.

I've never eaten a gooseberry so don't even know if I like them.

How do I know when the fruits are ready to pick?

@Doodledoop i was going to say Goosegogs too! We must have been posting at the same time, I didn’t think anybody else called them that and it was a family quirk🤣

I'm 37 and I've never seen a gooseberry before now I've got 5 bushes producing fruit.

I'm going to research how to look after them don't want to kill them.

When i was a kid i found a bush in the wild and didn’t tell anyone so i could have a secret stash! Your post reminded me of that memory! They can be a bit tart. I would freeze them whole ( done this with grapes )until you decide what you want to do with them or have a swop sesh with fellow allotment folk if you don’t like them….Or tell me where your allotment is lol..
Hope you enjoy your new allotment🥕

Littlemissprosecco · 11/06/2022 16:36

They need to be not bright green, even going slightly yellow when picked. Otherwise they’re extremely sour!

BestIsWest · 12/06/2022 12:43

Not heard or eaten ‘goosegogs’ for years. My DF always called them that. Yum.

StanleyBostitch · 12/06/2022 13:00

In Australia we can take a photo of a plant with an iPhone, then when we open the photo there is a little 'i' at the bottom, click on that and there is an option to 'look up plant'. That identifies the plant.

StanleyBostitch · 12/06/2022 13:02

I tried it with your photo and it was identified as a Gooseberry Rivas.

WhatsInAMolatovMocktail · 12/06/2022 13:04

Wait until they are starting to go a little bit golden. Once ripe they are delicious; unripe they are unbelievably sour and flavourless. You believe you can't buy them because the usual "ripen in the packet" approach of big farming process doesn't work so well.

You can make a fantastic crumble with them, or jam... or if ripe enough just eat! Gorgeous. Lucky you!

EBearhug · 12/06/2022 16:40

Waitrose has gooseberries in season.

Definitely gooseberry, there isn’t enough info there to identify a particular variety of gooseberry. Apps shouldn’t be regarded as the definitive answer unless youve checked with another source.

Are you sure it said “rivas” and not “Ribes” which is the genus to which gooseberry belongs?
