Please help me identify this plant which appeared in my garden. Each stem is up to a couple of metres long. It reminds me of clematis. Reddish stem, bright green leaves, side stem grows like grasping tendrils . I did not plant it!

Plant ID please

I think it's some kind of wild clematis. I've seen it with flowers in the sand dunes at Woolacombe, but in my garden it doesn't ever seem to flower...

The plantnet app is good and free. Can identify from leaves or flowers.

Look up Herb Robert , could it be that.
If yes it's a bit of a thug and will grow everywhere , it's a weed.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 07/06/2022 13:38

Clematis montana?

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 07/06/2022 13:46

I think it’s a wild clematis, aka old man’s beard.

Thanks- I'm not sure whether it'll flower here either.

Yes that's what's growing under the possible clematis. Lots of us have this geranium locally and I quite like it as a ground cover. It does need to be kept under control though!

Thanks everyone. Hopefully it's a nice clematis that will flower. I'll keep an eye on it.

I think it's wild clematis/old man's beard. It's known for its seed heads more than the flowers. The little pink flowers are herb Robert or similar, which is a completely different plant.

sleepymum50 · 07/06/2022 13:57

I have this in my garden, and as PP said it’s a clematis - old man’s beard. It has little white flowers.

it’s very fast growing, I’m using it to make an arch over a path. The other side of the path has a tall pyracanthas, so I’ve just shoved some long sticks/ thin branches into the pyrochanthus. The clematis grows up the sticks and all around it and anchors it all firmly into place. Voila, I have a rather pretty dingley dell archway.

Cut it all back in winter, and watch nature do it’s marvellous thing all over again next summer. Love it.

It can also make spectacular misidentifications, so use it as a starting point not a final answer

MereDintofPandiculation · 07/06/2022 17:00

It could also be a cultivated clematis rather than Clematis vitalba, you’ll have to wait for flowers. Some-of the species can self seed. Well, I presume all of them can in the right conditions, but some can do it in the UK.

I would have said Herb Robert. Looks exactly like mine. I know it's a weed but I think it looks pretty!

That’s not what she’s asking about! It’s the big leaf-in front of the Herb Robert Grin
