Ideas for shady patio- plants in pots

Would love your ideas on what to plant. I'd like perennials, and have a selection of ceramic pots to put them in.

Mainly shady, a bit of morning sun, SE England. I currently have a big rosemary but the 2020 Dianthus hasn't made a return so pots are looking tatty.

Thanks!

Hostas, compact honeysuckle for pot, lavender, acers - There are lots - very dramatic, small, work well in pots. Some verbena like shade. Ferns would be good and structural. See www.gardenersworld.com/plants/container-plants-for-shade/ for more ideas!

I have fuschias in my shady pots. They're doing ok so far.

@bloodyunicorns that's a great bunch of tips, thanks.

@under I had thought of fuchsias actually.

Hostas and ferns, heuchera, rose campion and other things with silvery leaves.

lightisnotwhite · 03/06/2022 21:44

I thought silver leaf plants needed sun? They need really good drainage as they like it dry.
Good flowers for pots in shade are begonias, hostas, hellebores and foxgloves. Also Camellias flower early but the leaves are glossy and evergreen.
Weirdly tropical type plants often do ok in the SE as there is low light in the jungle as long as it’s warm and sheltered from low temps.

I was coming on to say Hostas.
Other suggestions:
Fatsia Japonica (if you have a very big pot)
mint

I have hostas, Holly (for winter interest ) Acer's, and lot of hardy geraniums which do really well in the shade.
A particular favourite is the award winning geranium 'Rozanne'.

Thank you very much everyone. I fancy a trip to the garden centre today...

Obviously slugs love shade too and hostas are their absolute favourite meal. Don’t forget to buy copper wire or grit to go around the plant or pots. It’s a waste of money when your new plants all get eaten in a week ( voice of experience, sadly).

My shady bit is paved so everything's in pots, there's hydrangea, bleeding heart, Japanese anemone, arum lily and astilbe.

newyorkbreakfast · 05/06/2022 16:50

@pinky I just looked up bleeding heart and Japanese anemone. Very pretty. I'm presuming they repeat-flower? The stuff in my pots died after one season.

Yes they flower every year, bleeding heart is Spring flowering so already finished and the anemone hasn't flowered yet.

FindingMeno · 05/06/2022 22:00

I think arum lily and ferns look beautiful.

Manzana · 05/06/2022 22:02

ferns, so many sorts; Tirella, lovely delicate flowers; heucheras; hellebores

Beebumble2 · 06/06/2022 08:33

Hydrangeas do very well in pots and like shade. I grow all mine in planters, are big statements and they flower for a long time. They do like a good drenching and feeding throughout the summer.

newyorkbreakfast · 08/06/2022 17:09

I've got some fuchsia thanks, and will think about ferns. Hydrangea are very thirsty aren't they? Pretty though!

Great choices above. For the more unusual what about ginger, or for massive drama Tetrapanax.

Everything in pots needs a bit more TLC than if grown in the ground, so regular watering (not drowning) and appropriate compost/feeding need to be factored in. The bigger the pot the easier it is to look after in my experience.

Spidersweb fatsia. Beautiful plants.
