Replant growing lettuce?

Has anyone ever managed to replant one of those 'growing' lettuces with root ball attached? I'm clueless and would appreciate any advice! Thanks.

I've never come across a growing lettuce (other than the type I've grown!) but am guessing you bought from a shop to eat and want to know if it can be planted out?

If so, I would assume it can. It'll need fertile, moist soil and full to partial sun.

You can normally cut lettuce leaves 2-5 times before the plant starts to get ruined. At which point you pull it up and compost it.

Thanks for the reply @WatsonsToeTag
Forgive the silly question but do you mean you'd expect to see new growth 2/3 times from the same lettuce? I prob won't get that from this realistically but will give it a go. I think I left it too late to plant them this year?!

2-5 I mean

Sorry, yes. Typically lettuce like this is grown so that you can cut the fresh leaves off to eat and new ones come in their place. After about 2-5 cuttings (so you can eat the leaves), the plant is too old, too stressed and it's too late in the year to get much more.

Lettuce tends not to survive frost so expect it to die over winter, however much you cut it.

Defo not too late. I've lettuce ssedlings on the go now Grin

Those are plug plants which are grown to be able to transplant.

You can grow them in pots, in deep trays, in raised beds or in the ground. I often buy them as infil if my own get slugged or I have spare gaps to fill.

You can sow lettuce seeds up to about August, so not too late for plants

Thanks all. I did try before but they bolted. I'll try and give this one some TLC and lots of water.

They don't like too much heat and they will bolt in the summer.

Summer is unfortunately the worst time to grow lettuce!

Don’t plant them where they are in full sun all day, they prefer a bit of shade. Good luck.
