Budget ideas for my empty border

I have a rectangular shaped border. It is south facing and a complete empty canvass as absolutely no plants. It's about one metre wide by 3 metres long

Buy some annuals seeds and plant in swathes?

CatherinedeBourgh · 02/06/2022 21:45

What do you want? Flowers? Edibles?

Anything you can grow from seed is best for the budget. There are some 'throw and grow' mixes you could start out with. You can then over time add some more permanent planting. Buying longer term planting very small will cost less than buying larger plants, and will grow quite quickly.

Lots of places are doing free delivery this weekend.
This site : secretgardeningclub.co.uk/ is one of them, and sells small plants very cheaply.

So depending on budget, a few of them and some annuals from seed.

Or ask around, post on local social media and see if anyone has any unwanted things, or divisions.

Front or back garden

sandwiches77 · 03/06/2022 06:49

It is back garden and I would like flowers as I already have a veggie patch. The border is next to a fence so I guess some climbing plants might be good

Morrissons had loads of really cheap climbers last time I went. They seem to have quite a few perennials good on a budget.

Candleabra · 03/06/2022 06:57

Friendly neighbours/ relatives? Most people (particularly keen gardeners) are only too happy to pass on some cuttings or spare plants.

Cervinia · 03/06/2022 07:03

Agree with pp, Morrisons is the best for plants. I have spent 100s on garden centre plants that rarely come back but far less at Morrisons whose plants have come back again and again.

their cottage garden plants are frequently around two for three quid. They die right back in winter but come back again.

A b&q near us has been flogging off their plants for £1 including climbers so might be worth a look. Seems dependent on store though as our closest one is only doing half price. They've had 20% off plants this week though (and this includes sale).
I agree that Morrisons are decent too - I had a look the other day and climbers were about £5.

hedgehogger1 · 03/06/2022 08:44

Go to Morrisons they have loads and it's fairly narrow so won't need much filling. Maybe some heucheras? Don't buy jasmine though! Just spent about a week digging it all out of a border. So invasive

What about a lovely bee friendly seed mix of flowers? Like a wee wildflower meadow.

sandwiches77 · 03/06/2022 09:06

Like the idea of bee (and butterfly friendly), I'd like a modern twist, maybe with some lighting.. Currently looking at Pininterest for inspiration

Yes I was going to suggest a wild flower meadow as pp above. My neighbour has planted a mixture of different coloured poppies and elphiniums. They look gorgeous and very popular with the bees.

This is my favourite climbing rose , it's not a budget option as it's around £30 and I'm going to plant it in my new house.
