Are coffee grounds good for garden?

Just this really. Dd got a coffee machine and I have been keeping used coffee grounds. Auntie swears they repel slugs and they are good for nutrients in soil.
Are they of any use or should I just get rid?

I've read that they are good for stopping cats from using the flower beds as a litter tray. I think it may work.

Fabvegetablegrower · 29/05/2022 22:01

I put them in my compost heap.

NoToLandfill · 29/05/2022 22:06

Definitely good in compost, not sure about straight onto plants

I was hoping they'd keep the slugs at bay. It didn't work entirely. Not sure of the benefits to the soil but I still do it as the plants not affected by slugs seem happy 👍🏼

They need to be composted first. www.gardeningknowhow.com/composting/ingredients/coffee-grounds-gardening.htm

Interesting about the cats. Shall try this as next doors cat is always shitting in my garden. Suppose it can’t do any harm so I shall continue saving the grounds and spreading around garden,

They're not foolproof at repelling slugs but they do seem to help.

My dh has been pouring his coffee grounds on the raised beds a cat has been using as a loo and it appears to have stopped that happening

I mix then with a teaspoon of ‘Vick Vapour Rub’ the cheapest version. The smell put them off. We can’t smell it.

They're not all that good, no. Caffeine suppresses plant growth and can reduce seed germination rates.

Hi @RoofFlower would you consider attracting hedgehogs to your garden? Hedgehogs love to

My cat loves coffee (tries to drink from my cup and rolls around in ground coffee if any ends up on the floor), so not sure how good a cat repellant this would actually be. Could even be counterproductive depending on the tastes of your local cats.

I put used coffee grounds onto two out of four potted hydrangeas this spring and got the impression that they didn't like it. The other two had better and quicker growth for a few weeks, although the coffee treated ones have caught up now.

They're good for adding a top layer of mulch to plants that like acidic/ericaceous soils. Rhododendron, azaleas, blueberries.

MrsJamin · 31/05/2022 21:51

Freshly used grounds can still contain caffeine which isn't good to use straight on soil where plants are growing. Compost it first and its good.
