Two unknown plants have started growing madly in our (new-ish) garden. One looks like a clematis. The other, I don't know. My plant app says a buddleja globosa. Can anyone help?

First one does look like clematis but i cant tell the other. Wait until they flower then it should be easier.

LynneBenfield · 28/05/2022 16:45

The second does look very like Buddleja foliage

gruffalololo · 28/05/2022 16:51

Thank you!

I'm a bit worried about the second because it's taking over a pineapple broom somewhat. If it's a weed, I'd like to know soon so I can tackle it! When does buddleja bloom? 🤔

The Buddleja globosa here (south east England) is just coming into flower now, so you should find out fairly soon.

I'm in London! I wait with bated breath 🌬

My globose has a bluish tinge to the leaf and a bit furry I think and has the unopened flowerheads.

A could be clematis and B could be a Buddleia, but those leaves could be B. globosa, B. davidii (the usual one) or any of the others. B. davidii flowers later than B. globosa, July/Aug I think.

DaleTrimont · 30/05/2022 09:52

Yes to clematis and Buddleia . So many varieties of Buddleia that you won’t be able to tell until it flowers.
The clematis could be wild clematis possibly ?

gruffalololo · 30/05/2022 09:58

Thanks knowledgeable people! Is there a problem if the clematis is indeed wild?

My davidii hasn’t flowered yet but is starting to bud, it’ll flower in the next month or so and have flowers until the end of summer. They grow like mad though, so don’t be afraid to prune it hard! Mine grows about 9ft a year and I take it back to the 1ft woody base in autumn every year. It comes back vigorous the following spring, every time. In the early years, I didn’t bother and it was stringy and looked like the sad weedy railway siding version of buddleia (I know it’s the same really), so hard pruning is vital to give it a healthy, bushy habit.

DaleTrimont · 30/05/2022 14:36

Wild clematis is commonly known as Old Man’s Beard. It has small flowers but big fluffy seed heads which I like so I leave it in parts of my garden, but it is a monstrous thug ! I will take a pic of the leaves on mine to compare.

Shortbreadselection · 30/05/2022 14:37

The Plantnet app is good and free 😀.

yesthatisdrizzle · 30/05/2022 23:52

The second one is most likely an ordinary buddleia that has seeded itself there.

Many of our clematis are wild 😉Just not wild in the UK which is what dale means. Clematis vitalba, Traveller’s Joy, Old Man’s Beard, small white flowers followed by big fluffy seedheads. Prefers a more chalky soil. Probably no more vigorous than C. montana

Thanks all!

Ps I agree plantnet is a great app. But I think just showing it the leaves wasn't cutting it for these plants 😞
