Planting Peonies

I'm looking for some advice please? I've been given some tubers/bulbs from an established poeny rose bush, they were growing at the time so green leaves/stems but no flowers. I really want them to survive as kind of sentimental...what should I do with them? I have mainly pots in my garden, but am thinking of adding a small border in from garden. There is a small scrubby border which has been cleared next to a fence but its quite stony...bit unsure??

Peonies like full sun and fertile, well drained soil, so you need to dig in plenty of compost to improve the soil in your border before planting it. The fence should provide shelter from wind, which can snap their stems.
I suggest you move this post to the gardening section of MN, to get more replies!

They won't mind the stones but, as PP said, do dig a fairly big hole and mix in some compost for planting

Plant the roots so that they are just below the soil surface, with the green shoots above it. Peonies do not like to be too deep into the soil.

Fill in the soil/compost mix around them and give it a good drink. For the first few weeks, if you have more than about 5 days of no rain and the soil seems dry then give a long water. otherwise, no need. After a few weeks, there is no need to water unless we have a long drought.

Stick something in the ground to mark where it's planted. That's becasuse at the end of this year the green shoots will die back to noting, the plant will vanish and you'll forget where it is.

Next April/May start to look for the new shoots emerging from the soil. As they grow, look at some kind of plant support (e.g. peony cage) to support the over long stems from flopping with heavy flowers.

It almost certainly won't flower this year and may not flower next year (just green foliage) but that's fine. You should hopefully have flowers by the year after.

And they do need sun - so make sure your chosen spot gets at least 8 hours of sun each day (in the summer).

Brilliant - thank you so much for replies. It's a gorgeous deep pink flower, so really dont want to kill it!
