I got a quote from someone to bring our garden back to life - there are loads of weeds that needs removing, planting to be done etc .she has quoted a price that seems incredibly bight. What would you expect to pay for a similar job? We are in the Southeast

Depends upon whether you just want an unskilled 'mow and blow' merchant ( who are two a penny) or an artisan craft gardener, a much rara avis. A van, a mower and a hedgetrimmer do not a gardener make and a skilled horticulturalist does not come cheap - £17.50 - £20/hour at least, where I am in the Southwest

i can’t get someone to mow my lawn for £20 an hour in Edinburgh.

How much would you pay for an architect? An interior decorator or designer/stylist? Or a skilled joiner, plumber or tradesperson either hourly/day rate or job rate?
Then apply this same rate/cost to the person you wish to hire to bring your garden ‘back to life’.
This isn’t a hobby for them!
Unskilled mow & blow labourer expect to pay £20-30/hour.
A horticulturalist, designer or garden consultant then double it. Minimum.
I assume you are being quoted for the cost of the project rather than a day rate? Doing the hard graft of sorting out a garden, and then having the vision and understanding of plants (species and varieties) and which will work in your site/aspect/soil as well as the skill and creativity to envisage this and propose it to you, in addition to handling the planning, scheduling of logistics for external renovations (tools, equipment and skip hire/disposal) layout remodeling and sources for plant suppliers for ordering and delivery etc, what do YOU think is a fair price? 🤔

The Mowers and blowers and the hourly gardeners with a good plant knowledge will be fully booked up by now because the majority of customers need their lawns and hedges cut and gardens maintained especially now.Best get a few landscape firms or designers round for comparison.

This time of year, all good gardeners will be very, very busy. Stick it out this summer, do some research by asking anyone whose garden you admire what support they have.

In the quieter winter months, ask for quotes for a one off tidy followed by maintenance. Good luck.

Also keep your ear to the ground for younger people or returned taking up paid garden services. Good luck.

In London. We have a couple of fantastic teenagers who charge £15 an hour each to weed, cut stuff down, mow the lawn, tidy etc. They work incredibly hard. A qualified gardener is at least £25 an hour.

I live in the East Midlands (Leics) and have a gardener twice a week for £100 a day cash. Hes not horticulturally trained, does not know heaps about all the different plants but will plant anything i buy and research what it needs, weeds and even sieves out the baby roots, does our lawns in a fab diamond pattern, prunes roses amazingly etc. We have a formal garden and then a further 2 acres that he tends to. Hes brill.
