I’m still so new to this. And u have all been so helpful so far.
can I ask how often ur watering ur plants this time of year.
I know there are different factors , type of plant wether it has rained etc.
but some of my plant leaves are getting a bit wrinkled. And according to Google that means I’m either under watering or over watering. So just wondered.
mid it rains how long do I leave it till I should water again.
Any guidance would be amazing. I don’t want to loose my plants due to rampant watering 😂

I have been putting my finger in the soil around them. But even then I’m not sure.

I’ve been watering my pots and hanging baskets ( I have a lot) every day or every other day atm, apart from the last week when it has been rainy. But before that it was very dry (south east). The plants in the actual beds / borders, maybe once a week t

If it has rained overnight or a bit in the day then I don't water.

If it hasn't been very hot or sunny then maybe every 2-3 days.

When baking sun I try and give those in full sun a bit of a water every day but don't fret if I forget one day.

However my garden is one of those that the plants need to be hardy as I not a great gardener 😁

I very rarely water things in the border, when I plant new plants I dig the hole bigger than needed then add a good amount of compost and fill it up to the top with water, I let the water drain through into the soil then plant the new plant , which I will have watered well before hand . Then I mulch around the plant to keep as much moisture in as I can. I keep an eye on new plants for a week or so and will give them a drink around the roots. Established plants have to look after themselves though! I do have good retentive soil, if it was really free draining I would water stuff more. I water plants in pots about every three or four days if it has been dry, but I water them very thoroughly at the roots, and only in the evening. I am a bit kinder to seedlings which do get droopy very quickly.

My pots every other day, my seeds in the ground every few days, my new trees and hedge every week, my established plants not at all.

I'm Southeast, and watering my pots every day, I have a south facing garden which is a bit of a heat trap. On e new,y planted climbing rose has been watered every day. I haven't watered anything else at all.

Helenknowsbest · 21/05/2022 18:40

I water everyday right now in the morning unless it's been raining. Just have a look at the soil and if it's quite a pale brown colour it's rather dry and could do a water. In the hot summer I water twice a day. Once in morning and once in evening or late afternoon.

CockSpadget · 21/05/2022 18:55

I'm in the North, but have a south facing sun trap garden, and I've been watering mine daily for the last few weeks. We've had such a dry spring this year.

Discovereads · 21/05/2022 18:58

Watering pots every other day. If it doesn’t rain for a week, I put on the sprinkler for the grass and borders. It is important to water in early morning or the evening. Never water a plant when the sun is shining on it.

MajorCarolDanvers · 21/05/2022 19:03

None. It rains nearly every day.

Rachel4545 · 25/05/2022 16:12

I’ve been watering mine every day! But I also don’t have a clue what I’m doing. We have very clay soil too so I don’t know if that makes a difference

Caspianberg · 25/05/2022 16:15

I generally all summer water every 3 days if it hasn’t rained. If it rains enough, add another 3 days before watering. I don’t water more than necessary

seems to work, we have lots of crops grown and ready to eat already.

RockAndOrRoll · 26/05/2022 15:07

Hardly ever - but I have clay soil that holds water very well.

I might water the following after 4-5 very warm and dry days:

  • roses in containers (they are in massive containers)

  • sweetpeas when they were smaller; now they've grown up a bit I worry less

  • ferns: I have a couple of ferny corners that I try to keep damp

I'd also go up to the allotment and water every 5 (ish) days if it hasn't rained.

SFisnotsimple · 26/05/2022 20:27

SE south facing dry chalky slope so planting matches very poor soil

pots daily when not pelting down
veg patch every 3-4 days
new ish shrubs/trees every 3-4 days

the rest :
nothing

wildflower patch loving the sun and rain….

Tumbleweed101 · 28/05/2022 09:32

Pots and veg plants I’ll water each day if we haven’t had rain for a day or so or if it’s been particularly sunny. Borders I’ll water if there is a prolonged spell without rain. Newly planted shrubs and trees get watered once a week unless we’ve had a decent amount of rain until they look happy and established.
