Are these courgette or pumpkin plants?

I thought I'd planted courgettes from seeds I had left over from last year but now I'm doubting myself because these look a bit like pumpkins (whose seeds I'd foolishly kept in the same place!)

If they are pumpkins do you think it's too late to plant courgettes for this year?

Courgette & Pumpkin plants are almost identical. If courgette is what you planted then that's what they'll be!
Just remember, they only flower once for a few hours and you'll need a male flower & a female flower open at the same time, in order to hand pollinate (unless you have your own hive of bees). Natural pollination is otherwise unlikely due to the small amount of time that the flowers are open

But yeah, very difficult to tell Courgette & pumpkin leaves apart. You'll soon be able to tell once the flowers appear

My Plant ID app is saying Squash/Pumpkin 🤷🏼‍♀️

purplesequins · 21/05/2022 15:19

could be either.
not too late ime, they grow very fast.

They look slightly different to my courgettes.
Definitely not too late to sow more.

I'd say they are pumpkin.

Tim Dowling did a very interesting article in the Guardian about the dangers of using saved courgette seeds because of a rare but very unpleasant potential of getting poisonous ones.

If I can find it I will post a link...

I think it is only an issue if you have use ones from a courgette you had grown yourself because of the danger of cross pollination, so if they are shop bought seeds but saved from last year they should be fine – but just thought I'd pass it on just in case 🌱

It's not too late

Thank you everyone. The seeds are shop bought ones saved from last year, I think I might plant a couple more to be on the safe side. Pumpkins will be fine for Halloween but I actually want some courgettes to eat!

Natural pollination is otherwise unlikely due to the small amount of time that the flowers are open You can get parthenogenetic courgettes which don’t need pollinating. But to be fair, most people don’t have pollination problems with courgettes, courgette gluts are a standing joke among gardeners.

You'll soon tell, pumpkin leaves are far bigger than courgette
