Clematis

I had to prune a clematis back to the ground due to it being very neglected and just a tangled mess. It's now grown back with a vengeance, which is great as I've been able to train it up the wall BUT all the flowers are only at ground level! Have I completely ruined it? Or will the flowers maybe come back higher up next year?

Some clematis flower on last years growth, so next year you should get flowers on all of it. Do you know which one it is?

Thanks! That sounds hopeful for next year than. I don't know what type it is, I just moved into the house last year and started tidying up the garden. The flowers are large, a very pretty pink, but fairly plain, not the frilly type. It would be nice if I could actually see them properly but they are all on the ground at the moment.

If you post a picture of the flowers someone might be able to identify it for you, that would help with knowing when to prune it without sacrificing flowers.

If it has already flowered, and was huge, it may be a montana.

Do the flowers look similar to this? (They are usually white or pink)

Whatever type it is, your pruning may have disrupted the flowering pattern this year, and it'll return to normal next year.

No, not a Montana. I've seen those around and they are lovely, but the flowers on mine are much bigger. I'll try and post pictures.
