What is this and how do I stop killing it?

Can anyone identify this plant and do you know how to care for it?

It was a gift from Waitrose but it arrived looking healthier than it does now. I don't have a label for it.

I'm constantly removing dead leaves. It's in a sunny position but out of direct sunlight. I keep the soil damp but try not to over water.

Thanks for any help. I'm a novice!

The difficulty with browning leaves is that it can be caused by over watering and underrating. The roots need oxygen, so keeping it damp is possibly not helping.

I would take it out of its pot, shake off the soil and put it in fresh house plant compost. I try to water my plants on the same day each week. Stand them in water and then let them drain. Generally if you can put two fingers into the soil and it is dry then water.

It's so wilted it is hard to tell exactly what it is! How often are you watering it?

ErrolTheDragon · 17/05/2022 21:37

I'm not sure what it is. Florentina1's advice is good - it looks more like overwatering than under-watering to me.
Also, quite a lot of house plants are from the understory of tropical forests, so are adapted to warmth, humidity but low light levels. It may be that yours would rather be somewhere shady. I've got a few peace lilies, which are rather similar (though I don't think that's what yours is) - I've tried them on a north facing windowsill but they turn yellow and look unhappy until they're returned to a position on an interior wall.

It might be a Calla Lilly.

Aspidistra or chinese evergreen maybe? By the way the leaves come straight up from the ground. Have you checked if there is any water in the pot, it might be sittings in a little puddle and its roots are too wet.

Take it out of the pot and put it outside - don't put a saucer under it. It's warm enough for most pot plants now. I suggest this because most pot plants like being outside in the light.
Did it feel really heavy or light when you took it out of the outside pot? That's your next clue. If heavy, you've overwatered it, if it's light, give it water regularly. Go from there.

Have a look through their site & see if any of them look like what you originally received?
