Dead rose after pruning

So I pruned my three rose bushes, the one with the lightest prune has faired the best, the other two are struggling. One plant is completely brown and dead wood since pruning, and the other has half of it turned brown and dead and one branch growing new green leaves. I'm not sure what's happened. I pruned them like the David Austen website says to.

Anyone know what I've done wrong? Is there hope for them or do I accept its dues?

When did you prune them? What was the wood like when pruned (did they have new growth on them or was the wood dry and brown?) Are they new or old bushes?

Can you post photos?

greenerfingers · 16/05/2022 21:44

My mums net still doesn't let me post photos since the upgrade which is a pain. I pruned them early March and they all had new growth. They were nice and green. Be all brown Sad

Did you feed them after you pruned them? Might be worth trying with a specialised rose food.

I'd guess it's something else killing them rather than the pruning, I hack my rose down to a third of it's size every spring and it's thriving. Are there any marks on the leaves or pests you can see?

BadAtMaths2 · 17/05/2022 11:32

Roses are pretty tough so I'd guess it's something else. They need a fair amount of water when they are still establishing - it's been a dry spring and they might not have had enough water. might be worth digging around the roots and seeing what is happening.

But agree with poster above, you can pretty much hack them down to the ground and they'll come back.

I fed them, and I've been watering well. What a strange turn of events Sad. No pests in sight either.

My three roses. The totally dead one, the mostly dead and the one which is fine after pruning. It also had the lightest pruning.

Sad it could be a bad batch of compost if you used different bags in the beds. I've pruned roses to the ground and they've bounced back so it wouldn't be the pruning. Lack of water tends to be the only thing that's almost killed my roses but even then, they've bounced back. Have you cut the totally dead one to make sure there's no life left in it? If there's even a hint of life I'd just continue watering and hoping for the best. A weekly or biweekly dose of liquid seaweed could be good too. It's not a traditional Fertiliser so it's harder to overdo it.

March is really not the time to prune roses. You may have killed then

Its one of those "shit happens" things www.rhs.org.uk/problems/rose-dieback

best and only thing to do is to cut of the dead bits well into green wood with secateurs that you have cleaned with an alcohol disinfectant...hand gel wiped on with a cloth or kitchen paper is good. put the bits in the bin or burn them, don't compost them, and wipe the secateurs afterwards with more hand gel. keep your fingers well crossed!

Thank you for all the responses. I'll have a read of the link. Here's hoping they come back. They were gorgeous Sad
