Just watching it on catch up. Dear god what the fuck are they doing?? Please stop banging on about 'on trend' plants, that is the antithesis of gardening. Uggghh 😡

I wasn't too keen either, abut if a departure from the timelessness yet timeliness that to me is the cycle of growth. Circles within circles.
Anyway off I pop to the philosophy board 💅

I would have loved this episode if they had done it in like March or September. But it's bloody May, get in the garden & show us the outside!

Greaterthanthesumoftheparts · 15/05/2022 21:58

Isn’t it just a pre-recorded fill in while Minty has covid?

carefullycourageous · 15/05/2022 22:04

I thought it was a great episode and a nice change.

It is also important for the programme to attract younger viewers who can't afford a garden.

buckeejit · 15/05/2022 22:42

Ah, didn't know Monty had covid. Hope he's ok. Agree it's a nice change but would have thought they could have for someone else to fill the time, especially at this time of year

CoralBells · 15/05/2022 23:34

I enjoyed it. I think they try to include people who don't have a garden. Loved seeing all the varieties of house plant and I liked the guy with the 18th floor balcony.

They always do try to include those who don't have a garden, there's loads of container gardening features already, or courtyard gardens featured.
I did enjoy the different people featured and their approaches to indoor gardeners.
It was just, I think, the repeated references to fashion and plants being described as on trend. Seemed antithetical to the gardening ethos - mind you, I feel the same way about food, so possibly it's just my grumblesome nature

KloppsTeeth · 16/05/2022 00:11

I really enjoyed the episode, but I agree with the “on trend” talk. Taking about snake plants being easy to look after - great. Being “on trend” - not great.

RitaFires · 16/05/2022 08:33

I thought it was really nice to see what people can grow with minimal to no outdoor space. "On trend" does seem like a weird thing to say about plants but being popular means a plant may be stocked in supermarkets and more accessible for people who may not have a garden centre nearby.

JofraArchersFastestBall · 16/05/2022 09:15

I enjoyed the episode. I love houseplants and have done since before I had any sort of garden of my own.
I think a lot of the discussion of houseplants is online and can be quite consumerist and trend driven. Some of that was reflected in the language of the program. I find it annoying (and easy to get caught up in if you're not careful) but it's still a fun hobby. There are trends in garden plants too, just not discussed in the same way for some reason (different demographics?) - think of the Chelsea 'must have' plants each year, and the change in popular plants between each generation.

BackflandedCondiment · 19/05/2022 16:13

I don't think it was a covid fill in because Monty said this week would be a houseplant special the week before last - so it's been scheduled for a while.

I quite enjoyed it just as a change. Though it was visits with several people who crammed their houses full of more plants than most of us would ever dream of, so it wasn't totally relatable. But still, the plants themsleves were interesting and it was logically ordered to go through the categories of them. The chap with the 18th storey balcony was lovely and more relatable - probably because he was honest about using plants to help his mental health.

Looking forward to getting back to gardens tomorrow, though.

And then Chelsea next week!
