Mostly shade friendly flowering plants

I have an area that gets about four hours of sun a day.

What's the best flowering plant I could put here. It will be in a big pot.

Ideally I want something that will have a bit of height also. Would clematis be suitable I love these

Would wisteria work?

Clematis and wisteria are both climbing plants so would need some structure to climb up and can cover a large area when mature so not suitable for a stand alone pot.

hydrangeas are good in semi-shade and will grow in to a good size bush with pink or white flowers.

Clematis like to have their feet in shade and their heads in sun so if it can climb up into the sun then it is probably a good choice. 4 hours of sun a day might well be enough anyway.

Good point @bilbodog I don't think Clematis or hydrangea like being in pots. Could you put a planter in? Or get through to the soil?

bilbodog · 15/05/2022 12:40

Ive had hydrangeas in large terracotta pots for over 15 years and simply re-pot them with fresh compost and prune the root ball as well every 5 years or so. They look fabulous.

I lost my hydrangea which was in a very large planter so interested to hear they can grow in pots. It was always well watered several times a week.

If it helps. These are the sized pots if you can judge based on my pic. This is where they would go. No access to soil as it's paved.

Apologies those pics are really bad. Here is where they would go. One on either side.

Clematis in containers: www.gardenersworld.com/plants/four-clematis-container-ideas/

Mine are fine in pots, but they are large pots.

motherofchihuahuas · 15/05/2022 22:09

I really wanted a climber but I may get hydrangeas as I love those also. Any flowering plant I like to be honest.

I thought a climber would look good growing over the lean too/gazebo type thing we have

That looks similar to my set up - north facing patio doors. I've gone with hostas in pots. Not flowering, but today I noticed some flower buds!

Clematis will look poor during the winter though.

Camellias have lovely glossy leaves all year and fabulous blooms in the early Spring . Lots of colours too. A pot is great as like ericaceous soil so you can just use that compost. In the summer the eaves look lovely with a few lights on them. They can be grown as trees or bushes so good for whatever sized space you have.

motherofchihuahuas · 15/05/2022 22:59

Oh thank you will camellias climb?

@lightisnotwhite they are beautiful flowers I've never heard of those

You can get evergreen clematis but and clematis will need deeper pots. Like twice as deep. Is the pergola in any sun at the top?

Thighdentitycrisis · 16/05/2022 07:45

jasmine in a deeper container would be heavenly
