I bought 3 x expensive lavender from a lavender farm a few weeks ago all dead

Bought several cheap ones from Morrisons 2/3 dead

I assume it's from excess rain , it was reported in the right soil with Grit but something is going wrong 😭😭😭

Any wizards able to assist ?

Are you sure it's dead rather than gone over? I've treated lavender very very badly and had no issues both for potted and planted out, moved it from planned out to potted and vice versa, severely cut back some very woody dead looking potted specimens this year and it has come back fairly well. Look at drainage (we're in sandy soil here so things tend not to get waterlogged) and cut back hard if you can bring yourself to do so.

justasking111 · 11/05/2022 17:03

Could be shock. We've had some late sharp frosts this spring, kept stuff in conservatory and green house . Repotting also sets them back

TheSpottedZebra · 11/05/2022 17:09

Is it English lavender or French? Latter is really not very hardy.

Have you pictures?

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 11/05/2022 17:18

French lavender always dies on me.

English lavender is happy in a sunny spot with decent drainage generally.

Paranoidandroidmarvin · 11/05/2022 17:32

I put mine is a full sun. I planted in 70% compost and 30% gardening grit.

I had six. Five were planted like this. And one my husband Randomly planted in a flower bed. The five I did properly are just doing okay. The one my husband planted with nothing special is thriving. 🙄who knows lol.

JulesRimetStillGleaming · 12/05/2022 00:13

I planted two in pots last year and they seem dead. I keep looking at them suspiciously waiting for new growth but nothing. I'm very disappointed.

stevalnamechanger · 12/05/2022 00:24

Will post photos tomorrow !

Oddly last year didn't have any issues like this although lost 1 of three over winter, have one still from then that survived being cut back too heavily . Will be interested to see if it flowers

Like others, I have had no luck with French lavender which is a shame as I love it! The only one I seem to be able to grow is lavandula hidcote.

Paranoidandroidmarvin · 12/05/2022 16:53

I could be wrong. But if it’s not English lavender don’t u have to bring it inside in the winter. This was why I went with the end flies and not others.

Paranoidandroidmarvin · 12/05/2022 16:54

Not end flies. English. I hate my phone !

haggisaggis · 12/05/2022 17:00

I ordered lavender last year from a lavender specialist nursery and they did not even send the plants out until July as it wasn't warm enough to plant them out until then. (I'm north east Scotland though). So possibly just too cold for them yet. They've all survived the winter.

justasking111 · 12/05/2022 20:38

Lidl will be having English lavender very soon. I shall buy those

HamCob · 12/05/2022 22:22

You're best to just plant it in a sunny spot and ignore it in my experience!
Anything else and you'll kill it with kindness.

worriedatthistime · 12/05/2022 22:27

We have both types planted out front and both do fine and we barely look after them ?

nocoolnamesleft · 12/05/2022 22:31

I find that lavender thrives on basically being ignored.

Penguinsaregreat · 12/05/2022 22:34

Someone gave me some and I just planted it in my border. I haven't done anything else with it and it's thriving. Other things have died so who knows.

JulesRimetStillGleaming · 12/05/2022 23:07

That gives me hope. Maybe mine is still dormant and might still come good when it gets warmer.

AiryFairy1 · 12/05/2022 23:17

We had 2 batches (about 12-15 small lavender plants) wither away, the third batch in its third year is thriving and the only difference I can think of is the third was planted mid-late summer and we basically ignored it after the first 2 weeks of watering (was very hot) … good luck OP!

maybe try the Lidl lavender??

ohfook · 13/05/2022 07:30

Lavender always dies on me. I love it and keep persisting but it's not as easy to keep alive as people say!

Gazelda · 13/05/2022 07:52

I've had some in pots for years. They're pretty exposed to the elements year round. Each year I think they've died, but then I see new growth coming through.

Anyone know if I should cut the dead shoots off now and let the new growth thrive, or would that be a mistake?

StormyWaterCloud · 13/05/2022 07:57

My Lidl lavender (no idea if it's English or not but probably given pp comment) is thriving in really shit soil with loads of stones in it. Full sun and I give it a weed around every now and then but basically leave it alone

IStandWithMaya · 13/05/2022 08:12

I've had three lavender plants die over the years, all planted in the same 'ideal' spot.

Last year I bought two new plants. Kept one in a pot, planted the other in an 'ok, but less than ideal' spot and both are thriving.

Maybe the soil or shade is needs to be just right.

JamMakingWannaBe · 14/05/2022 08:02

Lavender coming into stock in Lidl next week. £2.99. Bargain!

APurpleSquirrel · 14/05/2022 08:21

I've got 3 English lavender plants in our front garden - south-facing, full sun against our house in crap soil (new build, so a mix of stones, grit, wood chip & a sprinkling of top soil) - they are rampant!
I bought a lovely lavender a few back - one of those ones with the tasseled bits (bunny ears) on the top of the flower spikes?) in Trago Mills, put it in the backgarden in full sun & it withered. It would perk up each morning after the cooler nights then wither during the day, so have now moved it to a shadier sheltered corner under the cherry tree - it's still got some green leaves so I'm hoping it survives but 🤷‍♀️

MereDintofPandiculation · 14/05/2022 08:28

They don’t like having soggy wet feet in winter. So, well drained soil and open aspect.

I’m on Yorkshire clay, but I have a S facing gravel garden just by the house, and lavender thrives. I have more self seedlings than I know what to do with. English lavender, that is. I wouldn’t even try French.
