Planting blackcurrant bush

I have a blackcurrant that (bless it!) has been living in a pot since I got it for Christmas. We were moving house in the new year and then it just took longer than expected to sort the garden and get it planted. It’s gone in the ground today. Everywhere I read says to prune it back to about 2 inches from the ground when first planting out. It already has lots of new growth and some buds. Do I still need to prune it or is it best left for this season?

I'm not really sure but they are tough as old boots imv.

I’d just give it plenty of water and enjoy the blackcurrants.
My don’t get any special attention at all!

Aren't they invasive?

mindutopia · 10/05/2022 19:04

Okay, great, I’ll just ignore the damn thing and assume I’m unlikely to kill it.

If you've just planted it out you likely won't get any fruit from it this season so you might as well go ahead. I'd check out the method a bit more though- simply cutting it down sounds odd.

I wouldn't have thought it would need cutting back. You've done it now so it doesn't matter. It'll probably need 2 years to get it to fruiting stage. Make sure if you keep it clear of weeds, so that it establish itself without marauding weeds taking up the water and nutrients. Currants are really easy to look after (as well as other fruits) so long you have patience for them to put down roots and eventually you'll be overrun with the gluts for years to come. They make a lovely jam or cake. 😜

I planted one a few weeks ago. It’s now got loads of fruit. Didn’t prune it but a few leaves did start to brown round the edges. On reading they need a lot of water in the first year. It took off like a rocket after we upped the water. Also gave it a feed.
