Can you grow them successfully in troughs? I have a bed prepared but last year they all got attacked by slugs and wondered if containers might be more protective.

We do. We grow them in a raised planter with a trellis on the back for them to climb.

I don’t see why not. I did an experiment last year where I bunged some peas in a hanging basket to see if they’d trail (answer: not really). They grew fine and cropped though, so a trough would be positively luxurious by comparison😊

Thanks , will have a go and maybe try both for comparison.

I grew runner beans in a grow bag last year & they were fairly productive, not as many as the ones planted in the ground but probably 70% as many. They were in a different location in the garden too so not sure how much was because of that.
This year I am putting 3 plants in the ground and 2 in a big pot.

I grow beans and peas in a 1ft square pot. 4 beans or 6-8 peas to a pot
