Nice smelling

Hello,

Would there be any flowers/herbs etc you would recommend for a balcony that would give an aromatic smell? I already have rosemary.

It's a very sunny spot.

Thank you

Curry plant if you like the smell - looks a bit like a silvery rosemary. Lavender, thyme. Nicotinia flowers smell lovely in the evening but when I grew them they were leggy and looked awful. Stock smell good but I've never grown them.

Lavender

I love immortelle. But it's quite marmite whether you love it or hate it.

GrouchyKiwi · 08/05/2022 15:39

Sweet geranium is lovely.

wizzler · 08/05/2022 15:40

Skimmia but I think you can only buy them Dec. / Jan time

GrouchyKiwi · 08/05/2022 15:43

Ah, apparently I know them by the old name. They're Scented Leaf Pelargoniums now.

Blue vein Surfinia or thumbElina petunias - scent billows out all summer and they’re perfect for hanging baskets.

other petunias don’t smell, but these are incredible and grow very fast.

Jasmine! Short lived but the loveliest smell while it lasts

Sweet peas are lovely and you could have them climbing up your balcony. Lemon verbena is one of my favourite plants for scent. Basil, Thai basil, thyme, lavender, sage etc are all lovely and useful in the kitchen too. How much space do you have?

DogsAndGin · 08/05/2022 15:54

Jasmine?

Babdoc · 08/05/2022 15:55

Clove pinks, sweet williams, and patio roses, all lovely smelling in pots. And wallflowers for the spring.

Excellent thank you everyone! I'm going to research

Have an enormous balcony, it's one of those period ones with huge columns. I'm not a confident "gardener" though

Mock orange is one of my favourite summer scented shrubs if you have room for one in a pot?

garlicandsapphires · 09/05/2022 08:58

Don’t know if choisya would work in a big pot but it’s one of my favourite smells for this time of year. White star shaped orange blossom smell.

Wildwood6 · 09/05/2022 18:19

Choisya is great in a large-ish container- its tough as old boots, as long as you remember to water it. I love the smell of annual sweet peas (the perennial ones aren't scented), and always plant them. But only plant them if you can commit to tying the stems in every few days once they get going otherwise you'll end up with a tangled mess! However if you can give them ten minutes or so a few times a week they'll reward you hugely! Roses are also tough as old boots, just make sure to get one that's strongly scented and disease resistant; if you look on the David Austin website you can set these options as filters to reduce the huge range of options that are out there. If you've got a wall you can fit a trellis to then you could also grow evergreen jasmine and honeysuckle. Finally, the smell of scented night stocks is absolutely lovely.

My favourite scented plant is heliotrope, but you need to keep it away from cats and dogs.
