Plants for a shady border

Hello all,
I've got a border directly below a wall and its' position leaves it in shade most of the day.
I'd like a bit of variety in there, perhaps flowers for different times of the year and some interesting looking shrubs.
Can anyone advise on what might grow?

Bluebells, hostas, ferns, day lilies, lungwort,

dry or wet?

I’m the same. One part of the garden gets no sun at all during the day. But it’s the wall I can see sitting in my kitchen. Gutted.

I've no idea about plants so I'm planning on buying a 'garden on a roll' instead, they do a shady border one in case you're interested

They do a shady border at Homebase as well. But it says less than five hours of sun during the day. And mine gets nothing. So didn’t want to chance it. May just buy a swing or something to put there instead

I have a hydrangea climbing the shaded wall (area doesn’t get any sun), tiarella (Foam flower), sarcoccus (wonderful scent), acanthus, arum lilies, hellebores and primulas happily growing there. It’s under a north east facing house wall, pretty crappy soil.

Fatsia japonica loves shade, thrives in it, and looks beautiful year round.

I'm no gardener but the things that successfully grow in this position in our garden are foxgloves and hellebores.

PS got mine a couple of years ago from
www.charellagardens.co.uk

Excellent nursery/garden centre and their delivery is superb (they deliver in their own marked vans as opposed to plants being thrown about inside a DHL van). I’ve bought a few gorgeous shrubs from them over the years. Never ever disappointed. Consistently happy!

most of my garden is shade. I have -

ferns, especially evergreen ferns because they look good in winter
hellebores & daffodils for flowers in spring
foxgloves for summer
solomon's seal & climbing hydrangea

PureBlackVoid · 30/04/2022 18:37

I’ve got a hebe, bergenia, pulmonaria and brunerra for some colour amongst the usual ferns and hostas. I’m planning on adding tiarella, astilbe and foxgloves later once everything else grows and I know how much space I have left.

We've been pleased with how well fatsia, mahonia, ferns, bluebells, cyclamen, camellia, hydrangea, primula, phormium, clematis and magnolia have done in our north facing border. East facing garden so we have definite sunny/sunless borders on either side

Sounds like you have the same soil type as me! Thank you for the suggestions

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I'll get buying.

Does the wall also create a rain shadow? You need to check if you are dealing with dry or damp shade as the planting will be quite different.
