Plant ID - friend or foe?

Hi. Can anyone identify this for me please? There’s loads of it coming up in one of my beds and I’ve never seen it before.
I did Chuck a load of wildflower seeds down last year, so hoping it’s something lovely.
however, it also seems to be coming from near the fence with next door, so could be an ‘invader’.
So, any ideas?
Thanks.

Does it have a nasty gassy smell when you try to pull it up? If so it is a weed. I can't remember it's name but I have this in my garden and it chokes the real flowers out so I pull it up with gloves on

Looks like jack by the hedge, if so is harmless.

SockFluffInTheBath · 29/04/2022 12:22

It’s a weed, don’t know the name, I think it gets tiny white flowers. It will self seed but it’s not difficult to pull up.

Jack-in-the-hedgerow , or garlic mustard. Wild flower that self seeds prolifically- you can eat the young leaves. I leave it to flower as it's a good food source for bees and beneficial insects

Could be a weed, coltsfoot? It definitely has foot in the name if I remember correctly! 😂
But the leaves look quite similar to hollyhock leaves also? So I'm not 100% sorry not helpful I know 😬😂

I'm another vote for garlic mustard/Jack-in-the-hedge. It can become weed-like, so leave it where you like it, pull it up in other places.

Amazing. Thanks for all the replies.
I shall tactically remove / leave as needed.
bery odd that I’ve got it for the first time ever but hey.

Get the Seek app and that will allow you to photograph and identify and weed/plant/tree.

Yes, it is garlic mustard, a wild flower ( not a 'weed', there is no such thing!), a member of the cabbage family, related to oilseed rape, lady's smock and, would you believe, aubrieta. The principle food source for caterpillars of the Orange Tip butterfly - so, for that reason alone, I would be inclined to leave some, but, yes, can become invasive if left to its own devices!

MereDintofPandiculation · 30/04/2022 10:30

Yes, Jack by the hedge/garlic mustard. A faint garlicky smell, gives a nice garlic taste in salads. (Double check id for yourself before eating, your photo may not be showing some features). It’s the food plant for the caterpillar of the orange tip butterfly. They lay single bright orange eggs behind the flower spike, so you might want to check before uprooting.
