What to plant here?

We have just bought 2 large planters, what can I plant in them to cover this wall? I was pondering Generous Gardener, maybe 2, with Winter Beauty and Princess Diana/Kate clematis and underplanted with some topiary interspersed with lavender, and the gaps filled up with lily of the valley and narcissus for spring and trailing campanula for summer, and a few heucheras.
What do you think? Any and all suggestions welcome!
Its a north facing wall in a South facing garden.

I think planters in that position will look lovely.

Two caveats - I have found lavender is only really happy and thriving in a sunny spot. I think Winter Beauty also needs to be in full sun?
Also, I would allow plenty of room for growth - planters can quickly become overcrowded.

I had a similar set up but by a fence (very shady spot in a south west facing garden) - my clematis absolutely thrived! And will grow year on year. Another option is a wisteria, but it might struggle without the sunlight. A hydrangea is a good option too, or a rhododendron?

The generous gardener is quite large, it probably goes 1.5 to 2 times the height of that wall.

Might be good to squeeze in a salvia or 2, they’re supposed to ward off a few roses issues.

As it's north facing I would be tempted to plant ferns with white Japanese anemones in them. This is what I am planning to do in a shady corner in our garden. I think the contrast of the foliage with the tall flower spikes would look amazing

Thanks everyone!
The wall is 3m wide, a bit shorter because the planters are 50cm deep, and I was hoping that the rose would find its way up over the roof too to pretty it up a bit. Do you think I would need two roses, or one and something else? I don’t want to crowd it, but trying to get the maximum out of the plants I use to look reasonable all year round.
Good tip about the salvias, thanks!
I did think about ferns and anemones actually, we have the variety white or wild swan on the other side and they’re lovely. I could end up being spoilt for choice here😂.
It gets the late afternoon sun.

We’ve got a north facing patch with ferns and anemones and it’s lovely. Probably the only cool and sophisticated part of my garden 😂

It sounds pretty- what sort of ferns?

Japanese honeysuckle, ferns, pieris all seem to do okay in a shady spot. Also mock orange does quite well in a shady bit of our garden and I love the smell. And climbing hydrangea, ivy.

Dryopteris felix mas is a reliable one. I think that’s what it’s called. We have a few weird and wonderful ones because there’s a nursery in the next village over that specialises in ferns. I thought ferns were ferns 😁 but there are loads of different ones so it’s worth looking into the difference leaf shapes and sizes.

gluenotsoup · 25/04/2022 17:09

Yes, I sort of distinguish much between them either, but it sounds a good idea😊. My garden is also in need of a bit of sophisticated style😂. Come to think of it, so am I…

Sophisticated is over-rated innit 😉

Think about year round cover . So you could do a clematis / or a honeysuckle in one and then a winter flowering Jasmine in the other for winter interest .

Not what you asked, but I love your planters! Do you mind sharing where you got them (and how much they were)?

gluenotsoup · 26/04/2022 09:44

Thanks, that’s what I want, I’m aiming for it to look good in all seasons as it’s visible from the house so I need to get it right really. Would it help if I posted a few more photos of the rest of the garden to help put it in to context?
glad you like the planters @0blio, they are Forest Garden Cambridge planters, I got them online from somewhere like Build and Plumb Nation, but quite a few places stick them and the cost can be very variable. I paid about £159 each I think, they do a smaller length too, and I think a tall slim one. I’m wondering whetstone put a coat of natural oil on them to protect them a bit.
