The frost watch

I am almost obsessed with looking at the weather app now relying to figure out when I can plant out what I have bought and what would survive in my unheated greenhouse.

I currently have inside many fuchsias, snapdragons, busy lizzies and tomato plants. Outside in greenhouse, I have seedlings of marigolds, zinnia, aster, sunflowers and some plug plants of varying perennials.

When would you be planting out any of this. I know my tomatoes have to stay in. They are not the healthiest anyway, having grown them from seed too early but I won't give up on them. Also how safe is the unheated greenhouse do you think? Temps at night are due to go down to 4 degrees but feel like 1 degree!

Also if anyone else is wondering the same questions the post here! Honestly mumsnet at the moment has been my go-to guide for gardening questions.

I'm planting dahlias out now. The forecast here is beautiful for at least a couple of weeks and I can't see us having frosts again in late May - I hope!!

Scenes here just now. That cucumber on the right was practically becoming a houseplant Blush

Tinfoil seems to ward off the snails (something about the texture?). I wasn’t sure so turned the first two into a tinfoil salt bath. I’m not even slightly regretful.

I took the plunge this weekend and almost everything is either planted or living outside in pots now. The 2 week forecast has an overnight low of 6 degrees so I'm feeling confident!

The hollyhocks, along with a handful of sunflowers I'd started off (one has been munched already), my little ammi seedlings and sweetpeas are all in the ground.

All the dahlias that were living in the house in pots are outside, but I'm tempted to stick them in the ground. The dahlias I started in the shed are much smaller so I'll keep them in the shed another week until they have a bit more growth.

I started some new cosmos as my first batch are weedy and leggy, and some more sunflowers and nasturtiums, carrots and leeks.

I have my windowsills back!

All my summer planting is outside, normally I wait until mid May onwards but this year I've done everything a bit earlier.

I also have my garage back as there were so many plants, pots and hanging baskets in there.

Looking forward to a stunning display of blooms in the coming months - hopefully!😁

I've left my baskets in the green house today , the winds quite strong and I didn't harden off for as long as I should of so they are having a days rest . Better weather tomorrow.

Help!! Something is eating my cosmos - but it looks like an animal not an insect as it's not just nibbled but stripped down to the stalk?? Any ideas? I do have cats but would be surprised if it's them..

starlingdarling · 14/05/2022 16:56

My cosmos have been eaten down to the stalk by slugs and snails. I've caught them in the act. I think my cats have a helping hand by trampling over them after I planted them out. I've just had to sow some more Sad

Oh interesting ok I have put down some slug pellets so fingers crossed!
