Hey, is there any good weed killer that I can use, I heard my grandmother used to use Daz powder? Or is there a suitable weed killer that I can get from the store/online? I feel my husband would be pulling weeds in the front of the house and back of the house at least monthly, so to free him from this chore, is there any weed killer? He was asking me so thouight maybe mumsnet can help us thanks

Learn to love your weeds. I have 10 dandelions in the back garden; they look cheerful, are good for wildlife, and I have happy memories of being a child 'telling the time' by blowing the dandelion clocks. Do children still do that?

Sand might not work but it does make the weeds easier to pull out! Could you seed some little trailing flowers instead. I’ve thrown in a few seeds into the cracks in our paths. Good for the insects.

Ferntastical · 24/04/2022 20:50

You need to manually remove then brush in paving sand - it is water repellant and has no nutrients so weeds find it very hard to survive.

OctopusSay · 24/04/2022 21:04

I use boiling water. It kills them quickly and is much easier than pulling them. It will need doing again, but weedkiller is nasty stuff.

If the weeds are clear now, zap them with hot water when they reappear , while they're still small, then a kettle full goes a long way

@Ferntastical is that the same as kids sand? I have some of that. thanks

We have a special tool for scraping between the slabs, it’s quick and quite calming.

Really? Not on my watch. I have weeds in my lawn and in designated largish patches of the garden. I don’t want them everywhere though.

Leftbutcameback · 25/04/2022 15:41

Would second the suggestion of boiling water for anything you really want to get rid of. I’ve decided to let the grass, smaller weeds etc grow between the cracks and trim them for neatness. My aim is to have something like a spreading herb or alpine growing in the bigger cracks to maybe stop some of the weeds.

For those who are shocked by the roundup suggestion, you can still use it in Tesco and I saw the council spraying it on verges the other day, so I don’t think we can blame people who don’t know for buying it.

Leftbutcameback · 25/04/2022 15:43

I’d love to have ten dandelions in my garden as a PP mentioned - I have about that many in every square metre of my lawn! You do have to keep on top of the more rooted weeds to avoid your whole garden being taken over by them.

ViaRia · 25/04/2022 15:48

I’m not sure if it’ll be the same. I suppose it depends on how your patio is laid. On our block paving driveway, we meticulously jet washed/ scraped everything out from the cracks. Then put down sand (it has to be a certain kind of sand, kiln dried I believe). Then I sealed it with something… patio sealer?? We rolled it on with a paint roller.

that was a few years ago and has been pretty effective so far. Only a few weeds still popping up in troublesome spots, so they are easy to keep on top of by carefully pulling.

We had the same thing (weeds growing in between paving slabs). I didn't want to use toxic weedkillers, I found recipes online for natural ones, but you have to keep spraying and it seems to be a bit ineffectual. Can't remember the recipe now but it involved a lot of Vinegar. I am sure you could find it by Googling 'natural weedkiller'. You can also add salt but that does mean that nothing will ever grow on that bit of ground again, apparently, which could be a problem if you or a future resident might ever want to change the garden layout.

But someone recently advised us to use a pressure washer, just direct it at the relevant spot and the weeds are just washed away! Easy (almost fun!) to do, quick results and non-toxic. Only downside is that bits of roots might still be underground , so we might have to have another go in a few weeks. We'll see.

We got a Bosch pressure washer, only about £58 from Amazon. DH loves his new toy. 😀

i have a scraper tool. I quite enjoy it.
neighbours use a pressure washer for about three days running once a year - they aren’t on a water meter 😃

the creeping plant suggestions a good one. Creeping thyme, camomile, mind your own business, all lovely.

Cherryblossoms85 · 25/04/2022 16:37

the other reason to persuade him away from any sort of weedkiller or other things like slug killer is that it also kills hedgehogs. They eat slugs, but slug pellets are toxic to them. Not sure about weed killer, but given that's what the slugs would be crawling all over, can't be good for them. Cuddly hedgehog, or less weeding work!

powershowerforanhour · 25/04/2022 16:41

Thread title made me laugh. DH- despite having commenced his 6th decade on this fertile planet, growing up in the country and being the son of an avid gardener- still sends up little plaintive cries of distress when he sees that a bit he has weeded a few weeks or months ago has got weedy again. He actually gets quite personally affronted.

Leftbutcameback · 25/04/2022 17:32

Weeding always feels like housework in the garden so I understand why people moan about it!!

mumznet · 25/04/2022 18:34

@powershowerforanhour hahaha, yes it's funny, and hubby has been asking me find out about 'weedkiller' please find out on mumsnet,. I've always told him no we don't use weedkiller. since he would have to do it regulalarly, I can see why he wants weedkiller. I think I am going for boiling water and then fill it up wih paving sand

@KangarooKenny · thanks. I'm thinking to use salt in the font of the house. would salt damage the concrete slabs? im a bit concerned about that.
