Lawnmower for my 76yr old mum - advice please!

My mum wants to continue to mow her medium sized garden..she says she wants a self propelled mower but they all seem heavy, would an electric one be better because it's lighter? I'm really confused and don't know how to advise her has anyone got any experience with this? Thanks

My mum has a cordless rechargeable one. It's light and great for her.

I had an electric mower and loved the weight, but hated the cord. You can now get cordless electric mowers like this mower which was a 'Which Best Buy 2019' and I would definitely consider it due to being light and having no cord to trip over (or be accidentally cut).

Can you get self propelling cordless ones? The self propelling bit will make it heavy.

I'd perhaps look at the robotic mowers - probably not good if the lawn isn't fairly flat though and I think they do rely on it mowing more frequently than you do with a manual mower as I assume they don't collect the cuttings.

One thing that is worth looking at even with the cordless ones is that normally have to squeeze two bars together to engage the cutting drive. Seems simple but makes even young hand axhes quickly, but a bungee cord can help. I think you'd need to see it in person to know....

Unless it's a massive lawn, a battery lawnmower is great. We have one with 2 batteries and it's so handy.
It's really light, as I was struggling to push our old petrol one up the (slight) slope of our garden, despite it being self propelled.

We've got a GreenWorks electric mower with rechargeable batteries and its great.

KosherDill · 17/04/2022 16:37

Battery mowers are very light, even the self propelled.

Tbh i got the self propelled and it's so light i never use that feature.

Which one @ScrambledSmegs

Daphnedot · 17/04/2022 17:08

She has a Gtech, but the one posted aoce from argos is cheaper and has great reviews.

Oakdog · 17/04/2022 20:31

We have a Spear and Jackson from Argos, we got the one with the strimmer, which is why we have 2 batteries.

ScrambledSmegs · 17/04/2022 20:48

@Coribosh

Which one *@ScrambledSmegs*
We have a Husqvarna but I think we've over-specced. For medium size gardens Gardena would be perfect - same group of companies, think they use the same technology and much more reasonably priced.

I don't know much about the other robotic mowers on the market at the moment, there are more than there used to be and presumably the tech has moved on since we bought ours c.5 years ago.

KosherDill · 17/04/2022 20:59

Greenworks.

SockFluffInTheBath · 18/04/2022 08:54

We’ve just picked up a rechargeable Bosch to replace a knackered petrol mower and it came with 2 batteries so does our lawns in one shot. They’re not overly huge, I’d guess maybe 400m2 all in. It’s very light, quieter and crucially it doesn’t fill the garden with petrol fumes (which was why I pushed for electric).

“One thing that is worth looking at even with the cordless ones is that normally have to squeeze two bars together to engage the cutting drive. If you trip over and let go, it switches off instead of making mincemeat of you as it fall on top of you.

SatsumaZoom · 19/04/2022 10:15

@MereDintofPandiculation that's such a good point I hadn't thought of that 😱😱😱😱

We have a Flymo robot mower and he is amazing. Took a bit of setting up but now he just comes out every day and bimbles around and takes himself home and lawn is always perfect!
