I have no idea what this is but it's coming up lovely Grin. I did buy a random 'perennial' mix last year so I'm wondering if it's something from that - but I could have sworn I put all that in the front border not here!!

Didnt spot the white buds, lily of the valley

StaplesCorner · 16/04/2022 19:19

I saw some of these today in the park, haven't seen them for ages, it was my late mums favourite flower.

FusionChefGeoff · 16/04/2022 19:46

Oooh wow - slightly worrying that I literally have no memory of doing this but what a wonderful surprise!

Lily of the valley

Aconitum · 16/04/2022 19:52

There are probably some on the other side of that fence. They are lovely but before you know it they will have completely filled that border and then will be a nightmare to dig out😃
Keep a close eye on them and thin them out every year after flowering.

FusionChefGeoff · 16/04/2022 22:13

Thanks for the warning @Aconitum I will make sure i give them a good clearing every year.

Yes lily of the valley- if you have cats keep them away

Magnoliayellowbird · 16/04/2022 22:37

Lily of the valley, definitely.

@midlifecrash - You have worried me now. These are appearing all over my garden. I have cats. Should I pull them all out?
knowinglesseveryday · 17/04/2022 03:30

On another thread people said the same about vinca. I have cats and they've never been interested. Nor in lily of the valley in previous garden. I'm sure you could risk it.

midlifecrash · 17/04/2022 12:27

RedDiamond I m sorry I worried you but the fact is the pollen can be very toxic. It depends how your cats are with plants. If the like to roll in the flowerbeds I wouldn’t risk it personally. All parts of the plant are toxic so if you have cats which chew leaves you would really have to keep them right off it somehow

Sunflowersinthewind · 18/04/2022 07:53

@knowinglesseveryday that was me about vinca! Tbh a lot is poisonous to cats, lilies are the worst in fairness. I am a bit extra cautious about plants and my cat though as mine likes to eat things and I am a crazy cat lady

MereDintofPandiculation · 19/04/2022 09:45

Have had cats and lilyof the valley for 30 years with no problem. They don’t have as much pollen as true lilies, nor is it exposed.

(Lilyof the valley is in the asparagus family, not the lily family)

So it's not as dangerous as what they say ? I've pulled out a load of it today as it appeared almost overnight.

So it's not as dangerous as what they say ? I've pulled out a load of it today as it appeared almost overnight. Probably is as dangerous as they say. But not because it's a "lily". It doesn't have the problem of lilies for cats, that they brush against it and get pollen on their fur which they then lick off. But apparently it's palatable when in flower, so is more likely to be eaten.

Lily causes kidney failure, whereas lily-of-the-valley toxicity seems more heart related. From what I read - I'm not an expert.

The wiki entry is fascinating. Apparently it's quite good for a particular nematode, extends its lifespan.

I've got a plant eating dog and didn't want to chance it. Shame as it would have been perfect.
