Honeysuckle

I've just planted two Red wood honeysuckle in planters to grow over an arch but have read they can be toxic to dogs. Have any dog owners planted these? I'm not sure with them being in tall pots that my dogs wouldn't reach if they'll be okay or if I need to bin them! Any thoughts appreciated, seems like anything I want to plant is toxic!

I wouldn’t risk it.

I dug up 2 things I’d ordered and planted when I realised they were toxic to cats. I would be heartbroken if anything had happened to my cat.

A dog of DMs neighbour had lots of expensive vet treatment after ingesting something, she can’t remember what though & she moved 5 years ago so can’t ask, but it was touch and go for a while.

I know you say they are in tall pots but if leaves, petals or berries drop on the ground would ingesting them be enough to cause issues?

We grow it and have a dog. TBH he never bothers with it but we checked what 'toxic' meant and found it causes stomach upsets but was unlikely to do anything serious unless eaten in large amounts...

If I'd had a dog that was a serious plant muncher, I might have throught differently. Grown in a pot I suspect it's unlikely to cause too much trouble.

The only thing my dogs have ever done is pee on my honeysuckles! Dogs 1, honeysuckle 0 (one is looking very sad after a year of this)

We’ve got 4 round the garden and always had dogs without any problems. The only thing we’ve ever removed for pets was a laburnum tree.

Oh thank frick for that! After reading previous posts I was panicking that I'd have to dig up my lovely honeysuckle that I planted against the picket style fence between my neighbours (and their lovely dog!) garden and ours. Thankfully he's not a plant eater either.

We have 7 honeysuckles and no gate! we have looked after dogs, have one that enters the garden nearly every day (we're in rural Fr.) to eat the food left out for our stray cats! Never any problem, if a dog is properly fed surely it wouldn't eat honeysuckle berries? We do have lilies and I know some cats don't like them but no probs with them either.

We’ve got a dog and Dh is out planting a honeysuckle rhubarb and a custard as I type. We’ll keep an eye on her. To be honest we have tulips, Daphne and hydrangea….Could never let her go out unsupervised.

Thanks for all the replies, I have daffodils and they don't bother with them though I know the bulbs can be toxic. The reason I planted the honeysuckle is because when one was a pup last year she chewed through the clematis I'd planted which is also supposed to be mildly toxic though I didn't know that at the time. I've put a trellis so she can't do the same thing again, I suppose it would be the berries or flowers if the fell and got eaten. When I had dogs years ago before the internet I used to ignorantly plant anything without any negative consequences! From this it appears lots of people have them and their dogs have been fine, thank you 👍🏻

alloutofcare I think if we bothered about everything that was toxic we wouldn't eat anything and our pets too!!!
