Snall bed, around 1.2m x3m. A wall at the back with ivy, a very old established rose, and a Hellebore that does very well. I planted some French lavender last year and few other things,most of which died . I want perennials that are easy, I'm very novice !

Salvia are a good alternative to lavender. I’ve also had penstemons do very well in partial shade

How much sun does the bed get?

Don't bother with French lavender again, they are touchy and drop dead at the slightest thing.

It gets a reasonable amount of sun, the sun comes up at the end of the garden, and the wall is about 4ft high so it's not really that shady.

Easy perennials that will thrive in sun or shade -
Hardy geraniums come in huge range of colours, are fuss free and look great with roses.
Potentilla (variety of sizes including some ground cover),
Nepeta (cat mint) - it looks similar to lavender but easy to grow, not fuusy on aspect, and has longer lasting and more vibrant flowering;
Lady's mantle - the lime green frothy flowers contrast well with nepeta.
Bergenia (elephant ears);
Daylilies will repeat flower throught the summer and have an attractive leaf;

Hebes; Mexican fleabane.
If it's a sunny spot, you could also do well with self seeding annuals such as California Poppy, Aquilegia.
