Any ideas what this is? I suspect it came into my garden via a bag of manure as it’s mainly in one section. The roots are rampant- growing horizontally and quite shallow. And obvs once you pull the roots break.

Could be ground elder, get rid asap.

Bit of a long shot as it is still in early stages of growth, but, from your description, and, judging by the appearance of the roots, it could be Enchanter's Nightshade ( Circaea lutetiana) - a wildflower and member of the willowherb family. Delicate and pretty, small, off white flowers in early/mid summer, but can become invasive, especially in damp shade where it thrives.
However, I am by no means claiming that my ID is 100% right!

another suggestion is bindweed, seedling leaves of this are similar to your photo and it definitely has long white running roots

FreeButtonBee · 27/03/2022 22:01

Thanks all for these ideas.

It’s defo not bindweed as I’ve battled that for many years (mostly eradicated now)

Not sure it’s ground elder - the leaves are very compact and more rounded rather than pointed at the ends.

And same for the enchanters nightshade tip - it seems too low growing and rounded for that.

I might put some in a pot in the corner of the garden and see what happens! I can’t find anything obvious online as to what it could be

Oooh actually Ive found a photo of an early seedling of enchanters nightshade and I think it might be the one!! @Beekeeper1 very clever! Will do some more investigation tomorrow

Definitely Enchanter's Nightshade, you can tell from the distinctive white roots. Don't put it on your compost as you run the risk of the root surviving and spreading to the rest of your garden. If you do pot it up to see what happens don't let it go to seed.

It’s not bindweed, bindweed roots are not such a pure white.. young leaves so not yet typical perhaps. Root is right for Enchanter’s Nightshade.

Definitely not ground elder which has compound leaves made up of separate leaflets.
