Climbing rose

Gardening novice here and looking for some advice please.

I'd like to try and grow a climbing rose in a pot. Where do I start?! Do I need feed specifically for roses? How often should I dead head and how long are they likely to flower for each year (acknowledging that there's lots of different types).

Thank you

Was making similar choices last year. Go to David Austin’s website. Check difference between climbing and rambling rose. You can filter by repeat flowering, scent etc.. it’s really useful for learning whilst you click!

Get the biggest pot you can fit in the space available. 1/2 barrel size is good. Buy a rose that doesn't grow too big and is a repeat flowerer (David Austin is a great start). And use john innes no. 2 compost. Feed it, deadhead it and it'll carry on flowering.

Fab, thanks both of you. I'm on the DA site now

Don't hesitate to get in touch with David Austin's customer services if you're struggling, they're really helpful. Last year I asked them if they could possibly identify the rose I had been given as a gift a few years earlier. They were really quick to respond and knew which one it was.

If you like pink and strong smelling then Gertrude Jekyll from DA is what covers the front of my house. The smell is pure old english rose and its heaven.

That's exactly the one I narrowed my search down to! Glad to hear it's just as beautiful in real life

Gertrude Jekyll is exactly the one I would recommend
