Patio fruit trees

Bunty55 · 23/03/2022 12:25

I have a patio cherry tree and a patio pear tree.

I planted them in the garden about three years ago and they are in the wrong place.

I want to move them now.

Is it the wrong time to do this? If I do it will they die?

When would be the best time to lift them and move them please?

Late autumn is the best time to move them.

How big are they ?

Sprig1 · 23/03/2022 12:32

It is not ideal but you could move them now. Take as much soil as you can from around the roots and give them a good soaking once you have replanted (and weekly after that if the weather is dry).

Sorry, yes now is totally the wrong time to move them as they are just coming into growth. Yes they will probably die.

You need to move then when they are dormant and take a huge root ball ( soil around them, it’s very heavy ) and keep them well watered for the rest of that season . And ideally out of cold winds / hot sun which will stress them.

Conflicting answers here !

I sort of know but thought it was sensible to ask.
They are about 6ft tall plus...

Is the trunk skinny like two of your your fingers ? Or fatter ?

It’s easier to move them if you have clay soil, as it will stick together in a big clump around the roots. But it will be too heavy to move on your own, it’s a 2 person job. And you will need to dig a big hole.

If you have sandy soil it will all just fall apart when you try to move it. The tiny roots which are the life support system will get damaged / dried out and it will probably die.

But I’m a pessimist and maybe @Sprig1 is right.

Yes the trunk is skinny. I will wait to move both trees. It's just that sometimes especially when the weather is nice I can become impatient :)

Thank you for the replies. Appreciated.

YY. Every gardener is impatient 😀. We can see in our head how beautiful it could be and we want it NOW 😆.
