Grey fence...what do you think?

I have a north west facing garden. I've been trying out some grey fence paint e.g. cuprinol dusky gem, wilko city slate colours.

Maybe its cos my original fence colour is red but the patch that I did, I just don't know if I like grey. Maybe its a tad too dark.

So if you've painted all your fences grey how does it look? Willing to share any pictures and what paint you used

I think it shows off plants really well, especially darker shades.. It's a mystery why 'cedar red' and the like were ever so popular?

RedWingBoots · 22/03/2022 20:36

"Cedar red" etc are popular because they are the paints/vanishes proven and guaranteed to last 5 years minimum. Some people have better things to do then paint garden fences every 2-3 years. They also fortunately fade over time.

RedWingBoots · 22/03/2022 20:37

Should add my fence is not "cedar red" but from similar line.

we've painted ours black - and it looks great ................. but does need re-doing every 2nd year at least

MissMaple82 · 22/03/2022 21:17

I think grey in general looks naff. Also seen a neighbours who's is just short of black and looks lush

Dreamstate · 22/03/2022 21:34

Hmmm okay think ill just go with it, can always paint over it if I hate it haha

AstroLoco · 22/03/2022 22:00

I'm interested in painting ours black (or close to black). Anyone have any photos of dark grey / black fences?

wohmum · 24/03/2022 20:05

Not the best photos but this is ours

There’s a house near hear with an all grey fence. It’s very cold looking.

It's because we have the wrong light for the majority of the year.

If the UK was in the med it would look fine.

Dh painted ours during the first lockdown with cuprinol silver copse (not corpse as I asked the guy at b&q Blush) it must have been popular as was always selling out during that time. Fence looks lovely, we’ve had quite a few compliments on it.

Blush21 · 25/03/2022 16:18

Ours is Cuprinol forest mushroom. A lovely, slightly lilac hued griege colour, it’s not too dark and actually adds some warmth the the garden

Ive done swatches - one in wilko city slate and one in curpinol silver birch. See it now in full on sunshine, grey day, rain and semi sun day. I think either will be fine.

Agree with RedWingBoots, it's all about the light. I'm in Melbourne and have Walpamur Ironbark on all my interior fences. It changes from stony grey to very dark blue as the sunlight changes. It makes a lovely focus for the planting. The point is that bright sunshine is on for many days.

What I have noticed, and no amount of sunny days can alter this, is that black is very unforgiving.
