Short & early flowering tulips?

My tulips are budding already and seem far shorter than usual - anyone else? They are all in containers, but deep ones (so I don't think planting depth is the issue).

Nobody? Just me with the shorty tulips?

Did you plant them at the usual time?

I’m no expert (my first time growing tulips this year and they’re not up yet) but interested in what replies you might get.

I'm coastal, south East. I too have tulips in large pots, and some in the ground. New bulbs I planted end of last year are showing green leaves, whereas the bulbs I have re-potted from last year are almost about to flower. I can see the bud and colour, so suspect they'll open within a week or so. They might be slightly shorter than last year- but I expect 2nd year bulbs to not be a good.

The ones in the ground are also only leaves, but on the side of a new drive so have been battered about a bit.

Mine are also about to flower both the potted and ground grown ones, they do look a bit shorter.
Monty says they become less vigorous as the years go by and replaces them. A bit of a waste IMO, I keep with them until they stop producing any kind of flower.

I planted mine in the autumn, and the ones in the ground are short, the ones in pots from the same packet are tall.

WobblyLondoner · 21/03/2022 08:33

Thanks all. Planted mine usual time (November) and they are all new bulbs. Odd. They are about 20 cm tall can the usual 45. Where in the SE are you @MarmiteCoriander?

My hanging basket tulips delighted me by being both early (finished now) and properly short - as promised on the packets 4? years ago, but they have always been leggier than is ideal. Normal tulips just coming up now look exactly as usual. (Every year I lose some to the mice and replace in autumn.)

MereDintofPandiculation · 21/03/2022 17:21

With Hippeastrum, stalk height is governed by light - better light, shorter stalks

TheSpanishApartment · 21/03/2022 17:24

Yes, I have a couple flowering already, and they are very short. They are in their second year.

Vinniepolis · 21/03/2022 19:17

I agree - mine seem to be flowering about a month early compared to last year and are much shorter (mix of old and new).

Ironingoutthecreases · 21/03/2022 19:41

Mine are short too, thought it was just me. Only got two flowering now as the squirrels (I think) have shredded the flowers from the others.

@WobblyLondoner- I'm on the Suffolk/Essex border. Driving around today, I saw some tulips in other peoples gardens in bloom, but theirs too looked fairly short. I assume its either been a warm winter or something else weather wise causing havoc?
