Anyone grow asparagus? How much shade do they cast?

I'm hoping to set up an asparagus bed. Probably 2 rows.
The "best" place for it is near the south edge of my (long, thin) plot where it will get plenty of sun.
However I am worried about the shade it will cast to the North as the plants get quite big I believe?
Spring - not an issue as the plants will still be small.
Midsummer- sun will be higher, so midday shade will not be too bad, but morning / evening shadows to the NW/NE will be long (may affect my allotment neighbours).

Late summer - Autumn: shadows will be worse, may grow to up to 4m or 5m behind the asparagus before the foliage dies! (If my calcs are correct!)
Which limits what I can plant directly behind. I will leave some space (may plant spring bulbs or alpine strawberries), plus space for a path, but then there will be a (hopefully sunny) veg bed behind.
I need to work out how far behind the asparagus the veg bed needs to be...

So how thick is the shade the plants cast? Is it quite solid, or more dappled?

The first few years ours didn't fill out. But now it's like a small fluffy forest. They grow to about 100, maybe a bit higher. They are quite dense now.

They are a beautiful when filled out. We also get seeds occasionally.

Thanks!
So quite dense then, once they have filled out?
1m isn't too bad though... I read some descriptions online which said they reach over 2m high!

The other option would be to put them near the back of my plot, where their shade would not affect other veg, but then the asparagus themselves would have less light. 🤔

Can't wait to grow them - but I want to get the placement right first time, as they are quite a long term commitment!

I don't think they cast much shade at all - it's a very fluffy plant and frothy so would be more dappled shade....

Then again mine have never done that well ... but even when I've seen them in France growing brilliantly it's all very frothy...

Ahh, thanks!
Was hoping the shade wouldn't be too dense, especially that from the top of the plant. Suppose it depends on how closely they are planted as well.

Although there is a lot of asparagus information online, it only seems to cover how the asparagus is affected by shade - I couldn't find much on the shade cast BY asparagus. So you've both been very helpful, thanks!
I think I will put it near the South end of my plot, and make sure that the veg bed is at least a couple of metres behind. If in a couple of years when the asparagus has thickened up, there is too much shade, I may have to reposition the veg bed.

Hoping it works out... the crowns are quite pricey!

We waited 3 years, but I got some roots from the asparagus farm and she said cut them the year after. We've got 8 in 3m by 2m bed which is pretty central in the front garden. I do grow flowers around them.

They are really feathery, not much shade at all. Pretty tiny green bell flowers too. Smile
