Tree on lawn

I have a small tree on my lawn and unsurprisingly the grass is patchy and bare beneath it. Can anyone advise on the better option of either seeding it with shade tolerant grass or digging a circle around it to add maybe bark?

It's a dwarf cherry tree if that makes a difference.

How big is the patch? A circle cut out will help the tree too, so that’s a good idea.

Can you lift the canopy of the tree a bit without it looking stupid? Ie cut off some of the lower breaches.

A circle cut out with woodland planting would be my suggestion

Oh great, thank you for your replies. Yes I think I can remove a few lower branches, the patch is roughly the same as the canopy I would say. I like the woodland planting idea very much!

Plant hardy cyclamen around it? Flowers in autumn or winter depending on species, and marbled leaves fora lot of the tear.

My mulberry has a big patch of germander speedwell at its base.
