Small tree

We have a small south facing garden. Is there a small tree that would suit there? Ideally shouldn't grow much taller than 2-3 meters and not give too much shade. There's also a nice rosebush about a meter away from the spot where the tree would be, is it too close?

We had to chop several tees when we moved in as they were blocking all the light, too close to the house and not great condition so I feel like I owe the planed at least one new !

Amelanchier would be good. White spring blossom, followed by pinky foliage which goes green over summer. Then turns bright red in autumn.

Just make sure you buy a tree shaped one rather than a shrub...

Ours is about 20 years old and about 3m tall.

Roses need full sun really, so it probably would be a bit close.

AlisonDonut · 09/03/2022 15:28

Q - Small tree?

A - always Amelanchier. Just a fantastic tree.

jowly · 09/03/2022 15:32

Sorry, ignored the poor rose... they're hardy things, I'd move it.

Snapcrackleandhop · 09/03/2022 22:59

Thank you, looks like we've got a winner ! Will have to think what to do with the rose though..

crab apple can be good for a small space. Or a quince if you like the fruit.

I’ve an amelanchier but only just planted it. Also a conus contra versa variegate which I love.

I’m also going to put a multi stem white birch in a big pot. I want something that’ll look good in winter….

What do you want it for?

Spring colour? Autumn colour?

Berries? Blossom?

Good for wildlife? Good for screening something off?

Or you can always have an Amelancier. Grin

GuyFawkesDay · 10/03/2022 07:57

We've just planted a Liquidamber tree but an upright variety called slender silhouette, so it doesn't spread outward too far. The colours in autumn are incredible.

Garden is too small for a tree to spread. I was looking at Amelanchier but very few stick to their "small" name.

Good questions Chardonnay ! Just to get more green into the garden. And actually would be nice to get some colourful spring flowers. It'll be in front of a shed so I guess I don't mind if that gets a bit screened out.

Thank you everyone for the other suggestions. I've been googling small tree for a small garden but mainly get magnolias, they are lovely but maybe not as small as I need.

I might not be able to help, but if you think about what you want then you should be able to find something that suits you.

I would probably be tempted to pant a fruit tree, but they can get quite big.

Magnolia stellata is small, but maybe a bit too small if you want to block out the shed and quite slow growing
ChardonnaysPetDragon · 10/03/2022 10:47

M Stellata is indeed quite small. Mine lives in a big pot.

Gardeningdream · 10/03/2022 10:50

Personally I’d plant a camelia.

I loved mine in a pot but it outgrew it and I couldn't have moved a bigger one. I've planted it in the garden now and it's flowering again and growing
SBAM · 10/03/2022 11:50

What about a fruit tree on dwarf rootstock? Or even just shape trained, I know the fan and cordon types of apples and pears can be limited in width as well as height.

RobinBlackbird · 10/03/2022 12:15

A small apple tree maybe?

I might do that. I have a lilac that's getting quite old and might replace it with the Magnolia.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 10/03/2022 12:49

A nice cherry tree maybe
