Have I left it too late to move a rose bush this year?

I've never moved any roses before, normally when I dig something out of the garden its headed for the garden green waste bin! But I've got a lovely rose in my garden which I planted last summer; I now realise in my enthusiasm I have planted in completely the wrong place. From what I've read the dead of winter is the best time to move them, have I left it too late this year? Any advice gratefully received!

It depends on quite a few variables; your rose, the modern ones are much easier to deal with, your soil of course. Though it's probably a good time to move it before it's put down roots too far.

They're also quite easy to take cuttings from just in case it isn't happy.

I moved one last year at the totally wrong time - in about July. I planted it in the new spot and pruned it quite hard. All the leaves fell off, it got some new growth later, but that was it. This year, already it is going mad - loads of new growth. I would risk it, but obviously you are risking it!
I am actually wondering how hard they are to kill! Mine must have been at least 30 years old according to my neighbour!

Just go for it, you can still buy bare root roses at the moment so although my roses have some growth they're not in full flow yet. I moved two roses last July, they sulked a bit and I got fewer roses but they grew strongly in the Autumn and look good now. They are pretty hardy I'm sure it will be fine.

Roses aren't that easy to kill. You might not have such a brilliant year this year but it should be fine. I had to move a load in May last year due to building work. I pruned them a bit first then I moved with as much soil as possible, and made sure they were well watered (but not over watered) in the new spot. They were fine. I just kept an eye on them not drying out.

Also cuttings are very very easy! I was surprised by how easy.

You can move them up until the end of April. I have moved roses at all times of year when totally unavoidable and only had one die, but it does stress them.

Thank you all so much! I'm going to go for it, and maybe take a few cuttings too @JustJam4Tea!
