Found box of allium bulbs - can I plant now ?

Hello everybody, I've found a box of allium bulbs in the garage just now. My husband bought them in autumn and forgot about them! I don't really want to leave them until this autumn….Could I put them in the ground now, I live in Scotland so it's still very frosty…… I realise they might not bloom this year, but would they be better off in the ground than in a box in the garage? Pic attached. Thanks as always

To be clear, he bought them in autumn 2021

I would say they have much more chance of surviving in the ground than out.

AlisonDonut · 07/03/2022 16:33

Alluims are pretty good at surviving, so yes get em in.

They may not flower this year but they may just flower late.

As long as there is life in them, it's better than the bin.

Great, I'll stick them in in an hour when he finishes work and takes the kids off me! I also thought they be better off in the ground than in a box in the garage! As it's still pretty cold and frosty here I'm harbouring a small hope that I might have some very life late flowering ones…. But I am prepared to play the long game

Might as well try. There's a chance they'll come up. If you don't plant them they definitely won't.

A couple of years ago I went a bit over the top ordering bulbs to plant and didn't get round to planting half of them when I should have done. Found them in the February and planted them - most actually came up but very late. We still had tulips and daffodils in June.

PerseverancePays · 07/03/2022 17:04

Me too, I've planted late and they've come up late. If you don't plant them they just dry out and die, so nothing to lose.

Worth a try.
What do the bulbs look like? Have they started sprouting in the shed, or do they look mouldy at all?
As long as they are not mouldy or damaged they should be fine I think!
If they grow but don't flower this year, they'll be even better next spring.
I love Aliums.

I haven't opened the box yet but husband is due to come in any minute so I'm going to dash out! Quite excited to open the box… Hope not mouldy

, Around 40% of them were mouldy. The other 60% went mouldy and had sprouted quite happily and looks healthy enough so in they went!

Glad you've popped them in @hassletassle. I think we get another good couple of months here in the central belt (at least in my patch of it!) than what the growing guides often say, so if you're further north I'd assume you've even longer.

Incidentally, were the bulbs from B&Q? I had issues with their bulbs going mouldy last year.

LouScot · 07/03/2022 18:19

Doh! I see the homebase in big writing now!

EezyOozy · 07/03/2022 18:27

Aye HomeBase, it said on the front of the Box 75 bulbs for £12, not sure if that's good value or not. I reckon I've got about 55 in. Sadly it was mostly the lovely big purple ones that were mouldy :(

I also found some allium bulbs a week or so back and decided to stick them all into 9cm pots in my mini greenhouse. They are sprouting already! Fingers crossed for yours.
