When do you start cutting the grass?

Please can you gone me some top tips on how you keep our lawn looking reasonable? We moved to a new build last September, which has a large turfed back garden and because it was nearly the start of Autumn we didn't have to do much. We have a dog so unfortunately have a few yellow patches where the grass has died, but would like to get it looking good for this summer 🌞

I start around mid/end March and feed with Spring fertiliser

In Autumn I cut it up until end Sept/early Oct and autumn feed

Start with high cut and cut in lines

Already cut mine last weekend and it actually looks healthier for it. If I’d left it much longer it would have been a nightmare on the first cut.

There are no hard and fast 'rules' as to when to start mowing - I mow mine throughout the year - just occasionally through the winter period, as and when it needs it, and with the mower set high, just to nip the top off the grass.
When you do start mowing, mow high for the first few cuts, to try and avoid encouraging moss - if your mower doesn't have a colllection facility for the 'arisings' then rake the clippings off the lawn to prevent 'thatch' forming which prevents light, air and moisture reaching the grass roots.
In early spring, now even, feed with a lawn tonic, with a high iron content, which will kill moss and encourage your grass to stay strong and green well into the summer.
Also 'scarify' with either a spring tine rake or powered scarifier, to remove dead moss, dead grass and other debris - this, again, allows light, air and moisture in to encourage strong grass growth.
Good luck and enjoy your lawn!Smile

Would echo hedgefullofbird

I scarify in the autumn as was amazed this time how much came out Grin
Literally bags of dead grass and moss

High cuts initially help as the grass is often wet underneath and it stops it being ripped out Sad

I agree, mow it when you feel it needs it. I always have my mower on a high setting anyway and I find there's no harm done.
I mowed it in December and again last week.

Going to have to do ours soon, not take a lot off, just to tidy it up before I sort the edges.

As long as the weather is dry, then you can start cutting it now, with the blades set fairly high - about 2". You can lower them bit by bit over the coming weeks.

It might also be worth sprinkling handfuls of grass seed over the whole lawn, which will help to fill in sad patches.

Way up north here.

Usually don’t need to touch it until end of April/mid May - not a bad thing considering we get hard frosts still.

High cut (if frosts look over) for 3 or 4 cuts and a bit of a scarify and pronging.

Due to the visitor dog, it is never beautiful. I tend to hope for green and no bald bits.

I cut mine in January because it was dry enough.
