Best catalogue for buying roses and shrubs

Please could I have recommendations for buying roses and shrubs online? We do have some good garden centres near us but I’m interested to see what buying online offers.

I’m particularly interested in buying David Austin roses and daphne shrubs, but any good companies would be good.

David Austin have their own online store.

Frosty1000 · 27/02/2022 13:25

I've been flicking through j Parker's, there's a lot in there

TheSweetestHalleluja · 27/02/2022 13:38

David Austin roses are fabulous, I'd really recommend them.

I've found gardening express to be very good for shrubs.

pandora206 · 27/02/2022 16:28

David Austin have a fab paper catalogue. It includes lots of information about choosing roses for different situations.

Another vote for David Austin. Once you’re on their list they send beautiful booklets through the year. A large A4 catalogue landed in my post this morning and I’m saving it for a quiet moment Grin they’re really helpful if you contact them and not at all snooty like some growers can be.

SockFluffInTheBath · 01/03/2022 13:56

Sorry, I have 8 of their roses and they’re stronger growing than the others.

I'm another one who has been happy with David Austin roses. They are very good quality and survive being sent by post or courier well.
I've had poorer results buying shrubs on line, and I've tried many companies. They do tend to send relatively small plants as it is difficult to pack and send larger plants. Those from Parker's I've found will need growing on for a year before planting out. I've concluded that shrubs are best bought from a garden centre.

David Austin for me too - the filtering by type is very helpful.

I only ever ordered Bare Root Roses from them which are a bit cheaper plus there is a promo code PEGASUS which gets 15% off.

Peter Beales have a great selection of roses - not just David Austin ones. Their catalogue's great. I've been very happy with the roses I've got from Cottage Memories. Also love the Sarah Raven catalogue but it's a bit spendy

Poor quality though- I had very poor results with the bare roots I bought last year and I wasn't overly impressed with their tulip bulbs at work either

Hayloft or Waitrose garden (use crocus) are probably good for shrubs.

Wildwood6 · 02/03/2022 12:12

I actually buy most of my plants online, so I've tried quite a few! Another vote here for David Austin, the catalogues they send out are beautiful, the website is really easy to navigate, the plants are great and they are really helpful if you need advice. Crocus is great too, although I find they are a little more expensive than other suppliers; but again the plants are great, their website is easy to use, and their advice is good too- they quite often have 20% off promotions and its worth waiting for one those. Hayloft sell lovely and unusual things, but I find the shrubs they send out are teeny tiny, especially for the price.

I've also had good plants from Plants for Shade (does what it says on the tin, but if part of your garden is shady I've not found anyone with a wider range of suitable plants), Jurassic Plants (specialise in unusual plants that you don't tend to see anywhere else which will thrive in our climate- I can spend HOURS on this website! Grin), Plant Wild (again does what it says on the tin and mainly sells native wildflowers, but I've had some lovely native shrubs from them) and Thompson & Morgan .

BeaLola · 04/03/2022 00:58

David Austin for roses definitely

Not impressed by Sarah Raven - catalogue lovely, quality not so
good

For shrubs I now only buy from some independent nurseries about 10-15 miles from me

Geppili · 04/03/2022 01:07

David Austin without doubt.

weemidden · 04/03/2022 10:02

David Austin roses are worth every penny. Impressed with customer care, website and the condition they are packaged in. 15% off just now with code STORY

I sound like i work for themGrin., i really dont. I'm a new gardener who was scared to grow roses - hate thorns, too much hassle etc. But tbeir website was great to use, and i now have a climbing rose that i love.

SouthOfFrance · 04/03/2022 10:13

My sister ordered from David Austin, the bare root roses. One didn't take at all so she emailed a photo and they sent her a new one straight away, no questions etc, brilliant customer service.
A few months later the original 'faulty' rose started growing so now she has 2 beautiful plants! I would 100% recommend them just because I think they are a genuine company that you can trust, and they have a really good selection of roses which you can filter by type etc.

BeaLola · 04/03/2022 14:17

I first encountered them at RHS Chelsea (bought tickets to take my DM as a treat but sadly she was too ill to ho - over 20years ago) . They had an offer on bare rooted roses - I think it was buy 4 & get an additional one free - to arrive in the autumn

Come the autumn the 5 roses arrived , and then the following week another 5 ! I rang them up & they were lovely and said keep them- those roses still going strong - I know have about another 10 (Blush- small garden but always room for a really rose) - we planted another 2 thus week - Gabriel OAk and Sir John Betjeman.

About 10 years ago DB took me to visit them - lovely

backintothefire · 05/03/2022 16:07

I'm slightly obsessed by David Austin roses - the new catalogue came yesterday and I spent a very happy hour browsing and daydreaming! I planted two bare root ramblers last week (Paul Noel) with hopes of training them along our garden wall, but now I want Claire Austin above the front door and Desdemona plus the Lady of Shalott in pots around the front steps Grin

Agree their customer service is fab and the prices are good given the quality and (hopefully) longevity of the plants themselves.

David Austin for roses every single time.

I’ve given up with ordering shrubs online (Parker’s, Thomson etc). They just never see, to do well.

For shrubs/summer bedding etc then I seem to do much better going to a garden centre.
